The SR.53 was one of the two British equivalents of the Republic XF-91 (the other being the Avro 720). It was one of the many experimental aircraft around at the time, & hoped to provide the RAF with a high speed interceptor capable of over Mach 2. The experimental feature of the SR.53 was its 8,000lb (3,632kg) de Havilland Spectre rocket engine, used for high speed intercepts & climb. This was accompanied by an Armstrong-Siddeley Viper turbojet, to provide electrical power & economical cruising. The only problem with this type of engine configuration was its high fuel consumption, which limited range dramatically. Like so many other British aircraft, the SR.53 was cancelled because of the 1957 Defence White Paper.
