The Douglas Skyraider was designed during World War II, but entered service too late to see much action. After the war, the US needed an AEW aircraft, & decided that the Skyraider had the right qualities to be produced as an AEW aircraft. The XAD-1W was the concept model for the type, & had an APS-20 radar located in an under-nose radome. A compartment for the two radar operators was created by extending the fairing aft of the pilot. Production amounted to 31 AD-3Ws, 168 AD-4Ws (with autopilot) & 218 AD-5Ws. In November 1951, 50 AD-4Ws were transferred to the Royal Navy (20 new aircraft & 30 ex-USN). These aircraft were designated Skyraider AEW.Mk1. The Fleet Air Arm’s 849 Squadron maintained an HQ & four sea-going operational flights until November 1960.
