The Bell Model 47 first flew in 1945 & was produced extensively in the USA, as well as under licence in several other countries. The Army Air Corps acquired the Model 47 in the early 1960s & used it for observation & liaison. The Army Air Corps operated the Model 47G-3B-4, designated Bell Sioux AH.Mk1. Agusta (Bell's European licensee) delivered 50 AH.Mk1s & Westland (a sub-licensee) built another 250. The first Sioux built by Westland flew in March 1965. Fifteen of the Army Air Corps' 300 Siouxs were built as Sioux HT.Mk2 dual control trainers, & were used by the RAF to train AAC pilots.
