The Shackleton is old, & is now out of service, but it had many years of service in the RAF. It has a design dating back to the Avro Manchester, Lincoln & Lancaster, & is powered by ageing Rolls-Royce Griffon engines. It entered service in 1951, & had a cannon turret in its tail. It's out-of-date AEW systems include the ancient APS-20F (I) radar, the 'Orange Harvest' broadband passive ECM receiver, & the APX-7 IFF device. The Shackleton used to patrol from the western Atlantic to the Arctic & Baltic, but mainly covered the North Sea, with its crew of over 10: Two Pilots, a navigator, an engineer, a Tactical Co-ordinator, AEW controller, radio/radar operator & three or more AEW Operators. The Shackleton crews were still using post-war equipment when the rest of the world's AEW aircraft were using computers. The Shackleton was also in service with South Africa, but has now been placed in storage.
