The F-86E Sabre (designated F.Mk 4 in RAF service) was the RAF's first modern transonic jet fighter. Some 430 Sabres were ordered to equip front-line fighter squadrons in Germany until British swept-wing fighters (the Supermarine Swift & the Hawker Hunter) became available. The decision was made shortly after the Korean War, in which the Sabre had proved itself to be a formidable fighter. All of the RAF's (& the Royal Canadian Air Force's) Sabres were built by Canadair. The first Sabres were delivered to Abingdon on the 8th of December 1952, & three other squadrons converted to the aircraft between March & May 1953 (No.3, No.67 & No.71 Squadron) to form the Wildenrath Sabre Wing. The Sabre equipped twelve squadrons all together, ten in Germany & two back in Britain serving with Fighter Command.  The last Sabres were replaced in June 1956 by Hawker Hunters.
