The Puma HC.1 is an extremely versatile helicopter. It forms a vital part of the UK's assault force, and was, like the Chinook, operational in the Falklands. A large concentration of the UK's Pumas were based in West Germany during the Cold War. Fast dispersal is a key component in the Puma's operation, as it is able to operate in urban and rural areas, where a dispersal site would be set up. On these sites, camouflage is very light, which allows take-off in a matter of five minutes, the camouflage being just a canopy cover to minimize glint. Sixteen troops or six NATO stretchers can be carried, with the Puma operating in the troop/ equipment transport and casevac role.

The Puma is an Anglo-French production, created by Aérospatiale of France, and Westland of the UK. The Puma dates back to the Sud-Aviation SA.330 of the 1960s. Soon, Westland joined the team, and the first Puma was put into production in 1967. Not only the RAF and the Armeé de la Air use the Puma; many other countries have bought Pumas, such as Spain, Indonesia and the UAE.
