Naval aircraft are either land-based or are carried on an aircraft carrier. Many ships carry helicopters as they can take-off & land in a small space like a helipad on a destroyer or frigate. Most of the Fleet Air Arm’s aircraft are helicopters, but there is also the Sea Harrier, which has the VTOL qualities of the helicopter combined with all of the benefits of fixed-wing aircraft. The Sea Harrier is operated from the Royal Navy’s ‘Invincible’ class aircraft carriers. The RAF operates the Nimrod, one of the world’s most advanced maritime reconnaissance & ASW aircraft. The Nimrod is flown from land bases in Scotland & Cornwall & was an integral part of the defence of the GIUK gap in the Cold War.
