| After competitive trials with the de Havilland D.H 110 Sea Vixen, the two-seat all-weather Gloster Javelin interceptor was selected to replace the de Havilland Venom & Gloster Meteor in RAF service. The Javelin made its maiden flight on the 26th of November 1951, & entered service with No.26 Squadron in February 1956. Several variants of the Javelin were made, refinements including new radar & new engines. Firestreak missiles were introduced with the FAW.Mk 7 model. The Javelin was retired from service with Fighter Command in favour of the Lightning in 1964, & from RAF Germany in 1966. The type was declared obsolete two years later in 1968, when it was removed from service in the Far East. | ||
