The Hastings replaced the Avro York as the RAF's standard long-range transport, & first flew in May 1946. The Hastings was a low-wing four-engine monoplane with retractable tailwheel landing gear & a cargo door in the port side of the rear fuselage. Production of the C.Mk1 totalled 100 aircraft, & some of these were converted to C.Mk1A standard with increased fuel capacity. In 1950, the Hastings C.Mk2 entered service with a larger tail, greater fuel capacity & more powerful engines. Hastings C.Mk2 production amounted to 43 aircraft, plus three Hastings C.Mk4s, which were similar to the C.Mk2 except for VIP interiors. Other versions of the Hastings include the Met.Mk1 meteorological aircraft & the T.Mk5 bombing trainer. The Hastings was phased out of service by 1968. It had served with 14 squadrons; 12 in the UK, one in the Middle East & one in the Far East.
