The Chipmunk was de Havilland Canada's first design, & was built as a successor to the DH.82 Tiger Moth. The first Chipmunk flew in May 1946 with a 108kW (145hp) Gipsy Major 1C inline engine. The Chipmunk had low performance & fixed tail-wheel landing gear, but was quite modern overall. Canadian manufacture of the aircraft ended in 1951, 218 aircraft being built. Production was then switched to Britain, & the RAF procured  1,014 aircraft, of which 735 were designated T.Mk10 'ab initio' trainers. Most of these aircraft equipped the RAF's 17 university air squadrons, but some also served with RAF Volunteer Reserve flying units. The Chipmunk was also produced in a military export version, as the T.Mk20. Nearly 220 were built. Portugal's OGMA also licence built the Chipmunk, & a version of the aircraft was operated commercially.
