Due to development problems, the Britannia failed to secure the commercial success expected of it. Despite its lack of success, though, the Britannia secured several orders from military customers, notably the RAF. Designated Britannia C.Mk1 in RAF service, the aircraft was ordered in January 1956, & first flew in December 1958. Based on the Britannia Series 250, 20 C.Mk1s were ordered. All of the RAF's C.Mk1s had mixed passenger/freight capability, rear-facing seats, strengthened floors & was also able to carry litters. The RAF also bought 3 ex-civil Britannia Series 252s & converted them into crew trainers. The Britannia was operated by two RAF squadrons (No.99 & No.511 Squadrons), & was retired in the mid-1970s.
