| AWACS & AEW aircraft have become a vital piece of military hardware. They provide long-range radar warning of incoming aircraft & missiles, & work to co-ordinate attacks. Since the introduction of AWACS in the RAF, the force has become considerably more potent. AWACS is a C3I system (Command, Communications, Control & Information), & integrates well with fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, naval forces & ground forces. AEW is more basic than AWACS & is used for long-range ‘early warning’ of missile & aircraft threats, usually for the defence of surface forces. The Boeing E-3 Sentry & Sea King AEW are AWACS & AEW aircraft. | ||||||||||||||
