The Westland WAH-64 is a licence-built version of the Hughes AH-64D Apache Longbow, with British components instead of the usual American ones. The Apache's most notable feature is its TADS optical system at the front of the nose. The TADS follows the vision of the pilot, & is linked to the gun. The pilot wears a monocle, which replaces a HUD. Because of this, the pilots must be specially trained to operate their eyes independently of each other, so they can keep their vision on the battlefield, while checking their instruments at the same time.  The normal weapons load for the Apache are twin Hellfire launchers, each carrying four missiles, & a pair of Rocket Pods.

The WAH-64 has been acquired for the Army Air Corps. The WAH-64 order will have been fully delivered by 2003, & started in 2000. The WAH-64 has a rotor-mounted radar, & an extensive ECM fit. There is a problem with the Apache, though. Its sight is nose-mounted, which means that the entire aircraft has to be revealed behind the tree it is hovering behind, not only to fire, but to acquire its targets. The Westland Lynx has a roof-mounted sight, which means that only its rotors are visible while it tracks its target, but the Apache's nose-mounting makes it much more vulnerable to AAA & SAMs while it is exposed.
