Developed to meet an RAF requirement for a STOL transport, the Andover was based on the Avro 748 civil airliner. The Andover had an upswept tail to allow the inclusion of a rear-loading ramp, a hydraulic kneeling arrangement in the landing gear to allow the hold floor to be adjusted to the height of any truck, & more powerful engines than the Avro 748. The Andover first flew as the C.Mk1 in July 1964, & 31 were built. The C.Mk1 served with three squadrons; one in the UK, one in the Middle East & one in the Far East. Seven C.Mk1s were later modified as navaid calibration aircraft, & were designated Andover E.Mk3s (four modified) & E.Mk3As (three modified). Six Avro 748 Series 2 airliners were converted to Andover CC.Mk2 VIP transports, two of which were assigned to The Queen's Flight.
