The Army Air Corps bought 17 SE313B Alouette IIs in the early 1960s as general-purpose battlefield helicopters when Westland Scout development was delayed.

Aérospatiale developed the Alouette II to replace the SE3120 Alouette, itself a development of the first French helicopter, the SE3101. The Alouette II was one of the first turboshaft-powered helicopters in the world, & offered excellent agility & performance compared to other helicopters of the time.

The Alouette II first flew in March 1955 & could be armed with 4 AS.11 Anti-Tank Missiles, machine guns or a 20mm cannon.
