Denton had no place to swim, except a creek or two, so Chisholm Bisher and his neighbor, furniture store owner Carl Hoover, built a cottage at Lake Waccamaw, near Lumberton-Whiteville. "We didn't realize how good we had it," said Furman in 2005.

These widows were married to twins, both Civil War veterans. During the war, when William Bescheer got furlough from guard duty at Salisbury Confederate Prison, he walked twenty-five miles home to Davidson County. When he returned to the prison camp, he rode a horse from his home to the Yadkin River ferry at High Rock while his wife, Martha Luther, walked alongside. They'd bid each other farewell at the ferry, then Martha would ride the horse home.
