Yanks Are Cruising into the Postseason

It was an important game for the RedSox - but the Yankees aren't known for being easy on their 'archenemy'. The game started with the advantage for the RedSox - Casey Fossum striking out the first 7 of 8 batters, retiring the first 11 Yankees, and having a perfect game for nearly 5 innings. However, the Yankees' hitting came alive, and David Wells shined like a new penny.

Known for having a usual bad performance at Fenway, David (Boomer) Wells disproved that theory, and surprised mostly everybody by recording a 5-hit shutout and pitching for 8+ innings. He only really found himself in trouble when there was a groundball to third basemen Ron Coomer, who was clearly having a hard time throwing to first, for the ball bounced over the head of Giambi, and the runner advanced to second. Then, Wells allowed a hit, bringing one to first and the other to third with no one out. But last night was Boomer's night. A fly ball was hit to David Wells, and he threw it to Jorge Posada at the plate, in time to get out Manny Ramirez and continue the shutout.

"To shut these guys out, that's great," Wells said. "We had great defense, guys made some great plays and I made some good pitches to get out of some jams. It's nice to beat them because they're in second place. We want to try to put some more distance between us to feel a little more comfortable."

And comfortable the Yankees should be. Boston no longer seems to be attempting to conquer first in the AL East, but they are battling for a first-place spot in the wildcard standings. The win for the Yankees has placed them 8 games up on Boston and pushed the Red Sox 3.5 games back in wildcard, behind Seattle & Aneheim.

And how did Derek Jeter do in the game? Well, he had a few pretty impressive plays - one even being a backhanded play to Giambi which was considered the YES Network's 'Play of the Game', and he had three hits on the night, and drove in two rbi's, plus scored a run. I have to agree with the sportscasters on YES (that's a first lol), I believe Derek Jeter is truly having one of his best defensive seasons ever.
