Summer 2001 Review

Well, Summer 2001 has been an interesting one so far.  My summer technically started in May, after finals were over for Spring semester.  In order to make sure I would graduate on time, I took a couple summer school classes to help me get some required stuff out of the way.  The classes I took were Media Law and Intro to Broadcasting.  Both classes were taught by excellent professors of the Murrow School: Val Limburgh and Neal Robison.  Both have been at the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication for years (one of my uncles had Dr. Limburgh when he was at WSU 25+ years ago!) and both are so knowledgable in their subjects that they are a pleasure to learn from.  While having great instructors was a perk to the summer classes, that's where the perks ended.  Classes were from 7:30am to 10:15am every day of the week, for six weeks.  Normal semesters are 15 weeks, so you figure out how fast we were learning stuff!!!  It was brutal, but I survived.  June 22nd, I packed my stuff in my truck and drove like a bat out of hell for Seattle.

Of course, before June 22, other exciting stuff was happening in my little Pullman world.  If you have read any of my other news entries, you'll know that my biggest problem here in Pullman is missing my friends and family in Seattle.  Needless to say, for about six months (during the hellish Spring semester) I was thinking of remedying that slight loneliness by getting a pet.  Since losing my old cat, Morris, to a run-in with car, I had been wanting to get another cat.  I had been surfing the local humane societies websites for cute felines every now and again, but was hesitant to take the plunge for a myriad of reasons.  Finally, in June, a pair of adorable cats showed up on the Pullman Humane Society website. They were brothers, and supposedly purebread Korats.  They look almost exactly alike, so they are almost like twins too.  They were BEAUTIFUL so I decided I had to see these cats in person.  They were even cuter!!!  They were 8 mos. old, already neutred, etc.  They were a little shy from a lack of attention from their previous owner, but after being at the shelter for a couple weeks, they were friendly enough to convince me that they were worth taking home.  A day or two later, after pondering and pondering, I finally broke down and got them.  I cannot tell you how glad I am now that I did get them.  They have been a joy to have around this summer, even when they are being bad.  :-)  I named them Maynard and Sebastian.  Sebastian is the cuddler, mostly sweetie, and he's got a little bit rounder face than his brother.  Maynard is the curious and advernturous one.  He's always exploring and getting into things, but when he wants to, he's also a gread cuddler.  I've got some GREAT pictures of them being cuddly with each other that I plan on adding to this page as soon as I get home to my scanner.  In the meantime, here's a couple I took with the webcam when I first got them home:

I'm not sure which one is which in the first picture, but in the couch one, Maynard is on the top of the couch, and Sebastian is the one lying next to the pillows.  Maynard loves high places, while Sebastian loves to be near people.  I had just been sitting on the couch prior to taking that picture...they were sleeping. :-)  Right now they are probably pissed at me for typing on my computer and updating my webpage most of the day, but oh well... they'll live.  :-)

The rest of my summer can be summed up in three words: work, unemployed, concerts.  Basically, I spent part of the summer bummed because I didn't have a job, then I worked part of the summer (unexpectedly), and during the rest of it, I went to a ton of concerts.  (See the Summer 2001 Concert Binge for the info on those shows...)  Hermanson was really slow, so two days before I came home, I got an email saying they didn't have work for me.  Great.  I ended up working for the Sheet Metal JATC for a little while, assisting the then safety director with getting paperwork sorted and finished for the grant they were working from.  I did end up "temping" at Hermanson when one of the PMs needed help at his jobsite.  That was nice, but the lack of consistent work made for measly income, so my summer was sort of dry.  The good news is that I got to catch up on sleep, play with my cats, see some damn good rock concerts, and be lazy for a while, and that my friends, is always a good thing.  Even when you're broke.  :-)

I'm getting ready to go back to school next week.  The first day is Aug. 27th, and luckily, I got all the classes I needed, so I am actually looking forward to this last year of school.  The plan is to be done in May 2002, so wish me luck.  In the next couple days I have to fill out my application to serve on the KUGR board of directors as program director, so wish me luck there too.  I really want to dive into the whole radio thing this year, especially since I've been gaining more band contacts at Gravity Check shows over the last few months.  I want to create a reputation of being an aggressive music supporter and innovative personality on and off the air, so I've got a whole ton  of work cut out for me.  My radio show will probably be switching to Wednesday nights (since I have Fridays off school...YEAH!!!) to better accomodate my study schedule, and hopefully, I'll squeeze a noon hour show in during the week to let some of the 80's classics out of their closets.  :-)  I've got to come up with a name for my 80's show... it will be more Duran Duran than Def Leppard, so it can't be buttrock named... I'll think of something.

Well, I think that sums up my summer fairly well.  Stay tuned for more cat pictures and other news updates once school starts!  Thanks for tuning in!

Love,
Jennifer
