Another View
This is the name of my Cable 8 TV show. I am one of four hosts on this talk show designed after "The View". We are all very different ladies, and we bring our opinions to the table on issues such as sex, love and relationships on campus, to Wazzu's party image and how it affects all the students here. We've done almost six shows, and I have learned a great deal about TV and how complicated it is... :-) I have many funny stories to tell...
Considering the season is almost over, I am remiss in getting this page set up. However, I do intend to fill in the blanks here, so please come back soon. For now, here is a picture of me after one of the shows... Not much, but this is one of the only pictures I own where I am wearing a face full of makeup. (icky!)
I know, you can't tell I've got makeup on, but trust me. I do. As I said, I will fill this page with all the gory details of the show, and if possible, even a few pictures from the shows. We'll see... Thanks for stopping by... and stay tuned!

Better late than never, right? I pretty much summed up the show above, so now I'll try and fill in the blanks with some of my favorite moments, etc.
First, I should explain what TV is all about and why it's so difficult. Because people can SEE you on TV, there is a ton more preparation than for say, radio. Lighting has to be right, mics have to be tested (one of the more time consuming processes...), make-up and hair has to be acceptable, and you have to always be prepared to handle whatever happens while on the air. WSU is lucky enough to have a studio to tape the Cable 8 shows in, however, unlike a normal show that has its own studio, 8-10 shows share this TV studio, thus the set up and clean up regimen that sucked so bad. The set had to be put together for each show, as did the lighting and sound equipment, etc. For those of us that were "talent," we had to be sure to show up early for mic testing and be ready to smile pretty for the camera all night.
Shooting the show was the easy part, once we got to it. We would essentially shoot live; once the cameras rolled, so did the show. There were a couple times that we had to 'break tape' and start over, either from the beginning or from a middle segment. THAT was frustrating because both times that happened, we were already going on 3+ hours of being there. Personally, the show that had the biggest let down when a tape break had to happen was the one show that I felt was better after we re-did it. It was the "sex, love and relationships" show, and I really liked what made to air better than the first take. I can't explain why, but it just felt better the second time. Not all the cast members agreed, but oh well. It was still a good show. I got asked questions about how sex related to my former marriage (yikes!) and what it was like to be single again... Tough questions to be asked on the spot, but that's what the show was about, so I went with it.
Just to give you a good idea of how different all of us hosts were, let me give you a brief description of all of us: I was the oldest (26 at the time) and the most experienced as far as being divorced, former homeowner, etc. Kye was about 21-22 (she seemed older than she was!) and she had a GREAT TV presence. She was the veteran of Cable 8 so she was more of a mediator during the show, keeping things moving forward, making sure that we broke for commercials, etc., on time. Kye also had incredible energy, which probably came from her caffiene addiction and her blonde hair. In our first episode, she claimed, "I really do think blondes have more fun..." Kye graduated in May and is proabably kicking butt where ever she is working now. Kye's infectious personality will surely get her far in the world of TV!!!
Melissa turned 21 during the taping of the show. She is from Tacoma (I think!) and even though she was young, she was VERY focused on what she wanted to do with her life. Melissa always looked professional (she had an awesome wardrobe) and she was very comfortable with herself as a strong, Christian woman. Melissa was also very good with words--she read some of her poetry on our first show. Melissa is going to be returning to WSU this year as either a junior or a senior. I'm hoping to share some classes with her (again!)!!!
Clare was our REALLY innocent gal. Clare is a sweet little Catholic girl from Federal Way. She was a freshman when we did the show, so she was the youngest. A little shy a first, Clare found her voice on the show during the most unusual moments. She spoke proudly of saving herself until marriage (as did Melissa, actually) and passionately urged other WSU women to stand up for themselves and do the same. Watching the video, you could see how much she believed in what she was saying, and I'm willing to bet that emotion touched a lot of people that viewed the show. Clare will be a sophomore next year, and will do wonderfully. I'm sure I'll see her around tons since she's still in the Com school program!
Kye, Melissa, Clare and I were the main hosts of the show. We also had two "street reporters" that were sent on weekly assignments to add to the show as "packages." Tara was our female representative and Dan was our male rep. Both did an OUTSTANDING job of getting the students' point of view on every subject from sex and love to how holidays were spent each year. Tara and Dan both got the chance to help host some episodes of the shows as well, and both did great. Tara was especially brave during our "slumber party" episode when she was the guinea pig, demonstrating stretching exercises with our guest, Steph, an instructor at the Student Rec Center. Dan's dedication to the show shined when he went to the Student Health Center and got an STD test to show the men on campus how easy it was to get tested for STDs during our sex, love & relationships show. Sometimes I think Tara and Dan had WAY more fun than we did, since they got to go out in the "field" and mingle with the student body for their parts of the show. It would be fun to do another Cable 8 show and be a street reporter instead of regular host. Maybe next year...
Leading this team of students was former Seattle radio personality, Ana Kelly. Ana used to work for Metro-traffic and KISW before coming to WSU to get her Broadcast News degree. Ana is very interested in TV now, thus why she was the producer of "Another View." (Kye was co-producer.) Ana was very dedicated to the show, displaying her strong work ethic and desire for excellence all the time. She was always striving to be the best show on Cable 8, so while she was fair, she also expected a lot out of us each week. I think she handled her duties very well under the circumstances, even though if you talk to her, she's a little uncertain about it sometimes. TV is difficult, and when you have so many different personalities in the mix, someone is going to be not happy about something all the time. Ana graduated in May 2001 and is probably working at some kickass TV station now. Look for her to be the next Barbara Walters or something--she's going places!!!
As you can see, we had a diverse group of ladies. If I can snag pictures of all of us, I will post them on here so you can get a better look at who all these crazy people were.
Our final show, a holiday show, was one of my favorite shows to tape. Ana came to my house and we filmed a package of me cooking a delicious dessert, Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls. Here's a picture of me with the finished product that night:
Ana showed me the finished package before the show aired; it looked pretty good. I haven't actually seen the last show yet. I got the tape (finally!) from Ana before graduation, but haven't sat down and watched it yet. I will soon... I have to make tapes for Melissa and Clare (and whoever else wants one!) so maybe I'll do it then. Anyhoo, that's it for now. I hope that gives you a better look at the show, and what I was doing on it. Any questions you've got I'll gladly answer! Send them in!!!
Thanks,
Jennifer
