Many people ask the question Is baptism really necessary? and some even teach that baptism is not necessary and that as long as you have faith then you are saved. This cannot be further from the truth. The bible teaches us that baptism is most definitely necessary. Jesus commanded us to all be baptized. Jesus said in John 3:3 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God, and when Nicodemus asked how this was possible He further said, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5). We must be born of water. Jesus says in Mark 16:16 He who has believed and had been baptized will be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. In Acts 2:38, Peter says, Repent and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Now there is a specific way in which we are to be baptized also. We are to be fully immersed in the watery grave of baptism. The word baptidso (the Greek word from which we get baptism) means to immerse in water. And it says in Colossians 2:12, having been buried with Him in baptism suggesting that we must be completely immersed, since if you are buried then all of you is under. A mere sprinkling is not enough. To be baptized, one must be completely buried or immersed under the water. It doesnt matter where one is baptized. Anywhere theres water one can be baptized. Acts 8:36 says, As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunich said, Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized? And Phillip said, If you believe with all your heart, you may, and he was baptized right there. It is not necessary that a person be baptized in a special place. One can be baptized in a baptism pool, a river, lake, swimming pool, etc wherever there is enough water for the person to be fully immersed.
It doesnt matter where someone is baptized, as long as they believe in Jesus Christ, that He is Gods Son, that He is the Savior, and that by being baptized their sins will be washed away. One must repent and confess their faith in Jesus Christ with a sincere heart (for God can read your heart,) and after that one can be baptized to receive salvation. Romans 10:9 states If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Colossians 3:1-10 states Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above where Christ is set your mind on the things above, not on the things of the earth for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God but now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him. After being baptized, we must put on the new self and try to stay away from sin.
All one has to do to be saved is to repent of their sins, confess their faith in Jesus Christ (believing in their heart,) be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and to try to live a life free from sin. |
