Halfmoon Creek Camping Trip July 4th 2004 |
|
|
|
My Cousin, his sister, friend, my wife, and I all camped out on South Halfmoon Creek in a beautiful little spot right after a nasty creek crossing. This crossing weeded out many people and the nearest campers to us were a good 3/4 of a mile up stream! Seclusion, that's how I like to camp. We spent from a Friday night to a Monday afternoon at that spot and saw no more than 6 vehicles and two hikers. We explored all the FS roads in the area and even went back into Leadville to watch the Fireworks display. |

My Cousins Jeep stuck in a 6' snow drift at 12,800ft. This site is in the top center of the flower picture. It's good to see so much snow still up there! |

A view up the Halfmoon Creek Valley looking West. This was a test picture. What do you think of it? |

This is a shot looking South East at the highest Mtn in CO; Mt Elbert at 14,433ft. It's a short, but rough drive back into the 10,200ft town a Leadville. |

One of Colorado's most Famous Mines is the Champion Mine and Mill. This is the mill as it sets at around 11,720ft. The Mill was built around 1890 and the ore was brough to the mill via a tramway with more than 6100ft of cable. Not sure if that figure is one way? The mine is actually out of this picture to the far left. |

An old boiler they used for steam to power the ore crushing process. The drum was close to 8ft in dia. and it stood close to 16ft tall; stack included. |

The mill is 114 years old and leans somewhat. It'll probably be there another 50 years. At least that's my hope! |

This drum was used to crush ore. They loaded it with steel balls close to 6" in dia. and then added the ore and rolled it. This drum is probably 14ft in dia. |

To the right of the drum was this peice. A little smaller and I am unsure of it's purpose. It is amazing to think how they got this stuff up here 114 years ago! I am sure the '63 F500 out front didn't do it. |

Another Colorado 14'er. This is Mt. Massive with 3 peaks well over 14,000 ft. This picture was taken 180 degrees from the flower picture above. |
