| During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, balanced eating can be easily forgotten about. Fruit hits the top of the list for the first health food to go. Most holiday party menus don't include choices with fruit and the cold weather climates can affect the availablitiy and cost of some of your favorite fresh fruits. You don't have to conform to the typical fruitless holiday season. Even if you find it difficult to meet the maximum recommended daily intake of 4 fruit servings per day, shoot for the minimum of two! By including a serving of fruit at breakfast and one with your evening snack, you have already met your minimum goal! Why bother keeping the focus on fruit this season? Fruit has always been noted for it's several health and nutritional qualities. Some sources even suggest a level of 6-8 serrvings of fruit per day to achieve optimal health benefits such as fighting heart disease and certain cancers. Beacause of a high quality fiber content, some fruits such as pears, apples, berries and dried apricots, have been associated with decreasing the risk of colon and breast cancer. The antioxidant content of bright colored fruits such as canteloupe, strwaberries and oranges also have cancer fighting qualities. And as far as heart disease and hypertension go, fruit consumption decrerases the opprtunities for saturated fat-containing snacks on a regular basis. Fiber and antioxidants also help with the disease progression. |
