What are Dalmatian's personalities like?

This is a very difficult question to answer.  It's rather like trying to answer the question "What are kids like?".  Because, like kids, all Dalmatians are different.  Their personalities are shaped by genetics, early socialization, environment and health.

MOST Dalmatians that are bred from carefully chosen pedigrees, have been raised properly and socialized well are very active, people oriented dogs.  They need firm and fair rules to live by that are inforced by the entire family.  All dogs need to know that there is an 'Alpha' order or pecking order to the family and they are always the bottom member.  This does not mean to abuse or neglect the dog, just make sure it knows that they are NOT in charge.

Dalmatians are capable of any task that you expect of them.  They can, and do excell in obedience, agility, tracking, hunting, road trials or just playing fetch in the back yard.  All it takes to train a Dal is lots of love, firm rules and motivation.  Most Dals are very motivated by toys, food and just plane ole praise.

They do not make good outdoor dogs because they do not have enough coat to endure extreeme cold, and they do not like to be away from thier human families.

Possibly the most influential thing on a dogs personality is genetics.  Bold outgoing, friendly dogs, produce bold, outgoing friendly puppies.  Dogs that do not have good personalities should not be bred.

Early socialization is very important to a dog's developement.  Puppies that are exposed to lots of new environments and situations are more flexible and well adjusted as adults.

Environment is VERY infuential to a dog's personality.  A dog that is surrounded by love, given clear rules and included in daily life is going to be a better dog than one that is tied in the back yard and ignored.  Good personalities can be ruined by too harsh or too soft treatment, and less than idea personalities can be shaped into wonderful pets by a good situation.

Health is also important to a dog's personality.  If your dog is has a sudden change in personality you need to contact a vet, there may be a physical problem that needs care.

Personalities will vary some from puppy to puppy in the same litter, so find a good breeder that is willing to work with you in finding just the right puppy for you.
