Myth: Dalmatians with brown spots will turn black. NO Dalmatians born with brown spots will always have brown spots and black spotted puppies will always have black spots. There are some very rare color variations such as brindle, tri-color and lemon,, but these are not seen often, and not allowed under the AKC standard.
Myth: Dalmatians are hard to train. NO Dals are no harder to train than any other dog as long as they are out of stable, trainable parents, raised with lots of attention and disipline and not trained in a boring way. Dals thrive on attention and bore easily, give them interesting chores with lots of motivation and they'll learn quickly.
Myth: Dalmatians get so excited they have heart attacks. Goodness! This was a new one. NO Dalmatians don't get so excited they have heart attacks. They may seem like they're excited enough to croak sometimes, but they won't. Dals are not immune to heart problems, but it is no more common in them than any other dog.
Myth: Dals don't shed. Oh boy is this one wrong! Dals shed year around, ask any dal breeder if dals shed and they'll give you'll get a modeling of hair covered show clothes and most likely a good laugh.
Myth: Dalmatians get aggressive as they get older. Now I've heard it all. No, Dals don't get aggessive as they grow older. If any dog of any breed gets aggressive as it gets older there is something wrong with his health or situation. Dals that have good temperaments as youngsters and are raised properly will retain that personality for life. A slowing of energy level is expected with older age, and some intolerance of rough play due to painful joints, but these are natural aging processes. Temperaments don't "go bad" with age in Dals,,, that's just silly.
