When we arrived after being held up at the border for 5 hours, we went immediately down into the NYC subway...
and this is what we saw when we came up the stairs at 23rd and 7th...
in one direction...
and in the other
A contingent of demonstrators who picked up 1000 coffins draped in American flags and carried them for the entire march - they stopped near Madison square garden and played Taps
Toronto Stop the War's beautiful banner
The Canadian contingent had a great impact. Here it is approaching - watch the fellow in the beige t-shirt in the next few shots as he reacts to the chant, "Opposing war is not a crime, you're welcome in Canada anytime!"
Toronto's horizontal banner was fun and also a good source of a breeze - it was 28 degrees with 93% humidity
There was a lot of colour and many creative elements...
like this giant inflatable pig
The people of New York were in the streets and in the buildings showing their support - these folks have one of United for Peace and Justice's "We the people say no to the bush agenda" rainbow flags
This one speaks for itself
"Friends don't let friends vote GOP"
People dropped confetti made up of shredded paper
The sign on the left says "Canada begs you get rid of Bush Please!" The sign on the right says "Down with elitism - Bush is the enemy of the people" - these were expatriate Canadians it seems. Or maybe they came to town for the protests
Support from all sides
The march is estimated to have had at least 500,000 people. Some media reported 750,000
Halfway through the march we passed near Madison square garden. Billboards battled it out with the protest signs
The march lasted 4 hours... and the Canadian contingent was noticeable, and noticed, the entire time
Amanda and Rachel carry the NOWAR-PAIX banner at the head of the Canadian contingent
We were tired but happy as we arrived at Union Square, where the march ended...
And then we went to get back on the bus to come home
