Munro’s stories allow the imagination to run away from the plot and I felt obliged to judge the characters for my own. There is a certain fragmented feel to these stories and the lack of a neat time context makes them lifelike. The result to this is a comfortable intimacy that I admire and is hard to find in other writers.

“I had often loitered in that way, wanting to walk with some important girl …”

 - Day of the Butterfly

There is no feel of invasion on the characters lives. Instead, with the comfortable intimacy, we are able to watch the persona develop, or even diminish, depending on our interpretation.
