My project for the research of mariachi and flamenco violin was made possible through a grant from the Presidential Scholars Program at SUNY Potsdam. The project entailed two years of researching the role of the violin in these two musical styles. The final product included: - Field work conducted in Mexico and Spain - A research paper (Mariachi violin, iFuerte, Vivo, y Alegre!) - A transcription and arrangement of El Son de La Negra - A BLOG (Flamenco violin) - Colloquium presentation and presentation as part of SUNY Potsdam's 2007 Campus Festival. - Poster presentation at SAM 2008 conference, and joint paper at CDIME Seattle conference. |
ABSTRACTJESSIE M. VALLEJO CRANE School of Music, SUNY Potsdam The violin is most often viewed as a western classical instrument, but what can one understand about the world through the role of the violin in other musical cultures? This paper documents my experiences and investigation of mariachi violin in Leon, Guanajuato. Informed by interviews and impromptu lessons, I explore 1) performance practices and settings; 2) methods of teaching and learning; 3) cultural contexts and stigmas of music and musicians; 4) aesthetics of the sound of mariachi violin. The popular son, El Son de La Negra, is used as a vehicle for understanding and highlighting points of the discussion. |
