ARTIST STATEMENT

Direct inspiration by my physical environment influences my ceramic work. The process of a journeyinternational travel, cross-state voyage, or a sixty-minute commuteis fundamental stimulus for my clay work, because it defines the boundaries of a void in time and space that is not restricted to participating in typical daily demands. It is my reaction to a particular site that encourages me to produce visual expressions of the emotions, intellectual insights, or the fantastic.

TESSELATIONS

Deliberate modular structure is stirred with organic improvision. Focusing on the term edge, these ceramic tessellations are pattern-oriented grounds that prevent movement and filter motion in a structure.

TILE CLUSTERS

Interest in pattern, layering, template, density, and visual weight influences these forms.

Surface investigations include slip-casting, press-molding, and hard-edge slab construction

BARRIERS

Poking fun about life in a post 9/11 world, barriers divide space through scale variation, decoration, and stackability.

BRICKS

Standard Special and Special Special Bricks are a genre of brick that have a standard design, but are custom fit to particular spaces. These bricks are handmade objects that are meditations on the visible building process of joints, seams, parts, and pieces. All vary in size from tabletop scale to flirtations with human-sized scale.

CONTAINERS

Each container takes the form of a piece of architecture. The ceramic object is to scale in floor plan with the existing building. The container consists of a payload for a mundane object. A conversation is activated between the comfort of protective packaging, the void of the object, and the irony of employing ceramics as my material for this dialogue.
