This was one of the main Jewish cities around 55 BC. Tsipori was called the "capital of the Galilee". You can see from the beautiful mosaics left that it must have been an amazing city. It was well known for its educational institutions. It was also located on the trading route between Asia, Europe, and Africa. In 63BC the Romans came and conquered the area. The Jewish people rebelled various times to the outsiders rule, but were not successful in gaining back complete control. During the Crusades(1100's) a church was built here and used as a main base. During the 18th century the ruins were used as a stronghold by the Arabs against the Jews until in 1948 the Israeli army went in and captured the ruins back. |
