MASADA(Stronghold)
Masada with the dry salt land behind her
Masada with the Dead Sea behind her
Masada is a modern symbol for Israel.  Every elementary school child will go on a school trip to Masada.  Every person will walk up the 2 hour hike to the top of this sheer-sided plateau overloong the Dead Sea.  It is THE  modern day symbol to all Israelis that Israel is their land and to fight for every inch of it.

In 66AD the Romans invaded the area.  The Romans put 15,000 soldiers around the base of the mountain.  They used Jewish slave labor to help them build a huge ramp up to the top of the plateau.  Inside Masada were 967 Jews who in the end burned their own houses and then commited a group suicide instead of letting a Jewish community  fall into the hands of the Romans.
