Masada is a modern symbol for Israel. Every elementary school child will go on a school trip to Masada. Every person will walk up the 2 hour hike to the top of this sheer-sided plateau overloong the Dead Sea. It is THE modern day symbol to all Israelis that Israel is their land and to fight for every inch of it. |

In 66AD the Romans invaded the area. The Romans put 15,000 soldiers around the base of the mountain. They used Jewish slave labor to help them build a huge ramp up to the top of the plateau. Inside Masada were 967 Jews who in the end burned their own houses and then commited a group suicide instead of letting a Jewish community fall into the hands of the Romans. |
