It was important that you wrote a letter.  (Preterite, imperfect subjunctive)

If I had a million dollars, I would buy a car.  (Impfect sub., conditional)

Or hopes (esperanzas) I hoped that I had enough money. (Imperfect, imperfect sub)

-Take the ELLOS form of the preterite minus -ron  plus +imperfect subj. endings

Endings:

Tomar -> tomaron -> toma + ending

que yo tomara

que tú tomaras

and so on.

For those stem changing verbs the stem change is kept.

sentir[ie,i] sintieron......... que yo sintiera

pedir[i,i] pidieron.......que yo pidiera

Irregulares

haber hubo hubiera

Also Spanish has a second set of endings used in the same way, exchange "ra" as "se"  This is the literary style and is more used in Spain.

for example

que yo tomara is the same as que yo tomase

It was important that you guys pay the rent!

Era importante que ellos vinieran a mi escuela.

It was important the they came to my school.

Era importante que los estudiantes hicieran la tarea.

It was important that the students did their homework.

Esperanzas

Los inquilinos esperaban que el dueño no subiera el aquiler.

The renters hoped that the owner (landlord) didn't raise the rent.

Guillermo esperaba que Silvia le diera un beso.

William hoped that Silvia gave him a kiss.

This tense sounds much like how we use the conditional would.

I hoped he would kiss me.  They use imperfect subjunctive isntead of conditional.  

Yo esperaba que el me besara. 

I hoped that you never left me. Sounds better as I hoped that you would never leave me.

Esperaba que nunca me dejaras.
