Semana 5: Nombrar las Cosas
- Language Spoken in Class: At this point in the class, you should start speaking more in English to the students. Depending on the English ability of your class, you could begin saying all the following phrases in English: "Hi, how are you today?" "Look at page..." "Who wants to start?" "Can you repeat that?" "See you next week." "Have a great week!" etc. This should help prepare your students for the Intermediate class which will be taught in English.
- Activities
- Family Members: One idea for the review of the family members is a crossword that we have made up. You will either have to make the copies ahead of time or use an overhead projecter in order to do this activity (supplies are in the ELOTE folder). The puzzle has the clues in Spanish. For example, El hermano de mi madre es mi and they would fill in, Uncle. You can also make up some of your own examples in English like, "Who is the father of my mother?" and have the students make up examples for you too.
- Family Tree: Another activity to review family members is to ask questions about Nancy's family tree on the Semana 4 handouts. For example, "How are Joe and Sara related?" (Answer: "Joe is Sara's grandpa, and Sara is Joe's granddaughter.") Try to keep the activity completely in English.
- Where are you from?: A way that you could review these phrases would be to use a map of the United States either as a transparency or just a page to hold up in front of the class. Ill also print out some small little maps so that if you wanted them to get into small groups and work together that way, they could all have a map for each group. This activity would help them to be able to use the phrases while being able to picture where in the United States where some of their other family members or friends might be. The way this activity would work would be that the students could look at the map and read a States name and use it in the conversation. For example:
-Where are you from?
Im from [Alabama].
-Where is he from?
Hes from [New York].
-Where are they from?
They are from [Kentucky and North Carolina].
- Homework: Go over Employment Application. Although theres no references section on this application, explain to them what that section is and let them know that you and the other teacher can be job references for them. Write your current phone number and address on the board and have the students copy them down as job references. Be sure that you know the names of all of the students who are writing down your reference information so that you can give them a good reference if anyone contacts you.
- Resume: There are a few sample resumes in the ELOTE folder. For any student who is interested in developing a resume, you can give them a sample to take with them and think about and have them bring back the information. If you don't have time to write up the information for them, Jessica Henry will write the resume. Leave the information they give you in the next to last section of the ELOTE binder for Jessica to pick up, and the finished resume will be in the same place within one to two weeks.
