Semana 4: Solicitar un Trabajo
- Activities
- Work Schedules: First write "Hi, I'd like my work schedule (Hola, me gustaria mi horario de trabajo) [jai aid laik mai werk skeywel]" and "You work... (Trabajas...) [iu uerk...]" on the board. Have them use these for the activity.
This will be a kind of role playing game. Pretend that your students are calling in to work to get their schedule. Read out their schedule made up at random to them for the next two weeks. It would probably work best if you pretend these two weeks are spanning the end of one month to the beginning of the next. Then they would write down the schedule you gave them. For example, you could say, You are working on:
Tuesday, October 27th
Thursday, October 30th
Saturday, November 1st
Monday, November 3rd
Wednesday, November 5th
Friday, November 7th
Sunday, November 9th.
With this activity, check that they are writing the dates the correct way if they shorten them the correct way as in 10/27 or 11/7, because it is the other way around in Spanish. We dont really have telling-time in the lessons but that could also be an element of this activity by saying, You work on Tuesday, October 27th at 4:00 pm. And also they get practice with their numbers.
- Holidays and Historical Dates: For this activity, you will hold up the flashcard and the students will tell you the date. It's also good to ask them if they know about this historical date or holiday. If they don't know, you can explain it to them briefly. Since learning part of learning a new language is learning about the culture of the people who speak it, this will help them to understand a little more about our culture.
So, for example, with the flashcard that says The Signing of the Declaration of Independence 7-4-1776, they will tell you, "July fourth, seventeen seventy-six." Then you would ask them if they know what this means, and if not tell them that it was when we gained our independence from England, and that every year on July 4th we have a holiday now called Independence Day.
- Taking Orders: Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil for them to do some simple addition and subtraction. Write on the board, "Thankyou so much" and "I really appreciate it" on one side and "You're welcome," "No problem," and "Don't mention it" on the other. Tell the students to use these phrases after they have received their order.
This activity is a little bit complicated. First, the students will follow the script in their vocab from week 3 that starts "Hi, may I take your order please." Some of the phrases may not be applicable. The student taking the order will write down the price of each item, and then add up a total. The other student will give the "cashier" a fake money and the cashier will make change with the fake money.
After the order is paid for, the "customer" should ask for whichever condiments they want for their order and then thank the "cashier" with one of the phrases on the board. The "cashier" will then use one of the "you're welcome" phrases to respond.
- Homework: Go over the number homework together in class.
- Pronunciation Activity: sh: Go over in class. (See week 2.) Like the sound when someone tells someone to be quiet.
- Pronunciation Activity: zh: Like the sound "sh" but add vibration to the vocal cords.
- Week 4: Applying for a Job: Go over in class.
- Eployment Application: This is homework. Tell the students that you want them to use the vocabulary they are learning in week 4 to try to fill out this application. Theyll need to bring the application to class 5 to go over in class.
