Lesson Plan and Activity Ideas

Last Updated: 12-19-03

Semana 1: Introducción
  1. Introductions: First, you should introduce yourselves to the class and write your names and contact information on the board (phone number and e-mail address). Next hand around a piece of paper to sign in that asks for the students’ names and phone numbers. Be sure to stress that this is voluntary, “No tienes que darnos esta información.”

  2. Expectations: Ask the students what specific vocabulary and phrases they'd like to learn. What class structure would be best for them? Take note of their ideas to try to integrate them into the classes. Please send this information to the ELOTEteachers yahoo group after class.

  3. Información Esencial: Have the students write the teacher contact information on the top of the sheet. Write on the board when the class will meet each week and where. Read through the syllabus together and discuss each part.

  4. Class Progression:This quarter we will not be posting the class schedule based on class number to be taught. Let your students know that we'll adjust what class we teach depending on what class the students want taught. (IMPORTANT NOTE: Please make sure you are prepared to teach any class in the series, although more than likely you will end up following a normal progression from class 1 to class 8. If the class is divided on what class they'd like to learn, you can split the class in half and have each teacher teach a different class.)

  5. Handouts: Let everyone know that they should bring the previous week's packet to class with them in order to have a successful class.

  6. Guía de Leer en Español: This is not for everyone. There may be some people attending the classes who have trouble reading. We don’t want to give this sheet to some people and not others, because people may be sensitive about their reading abilities, so we are giving it to everyone. You don't need to talk about this handout in class.

  7. Pronunciación: Emphasize when you hand this out that they won't have to memorize it. It's just a guide for our pronunciation help. With the class, explain each new symbol and have the class read the examples together. Explain that English is different than Spanish in that the letters we use to write don’t always make the same sounds. Therefore, we’re going to use symbols to represent the pronunciation of the vocabulary words so that the students can practice saying the words at home, even if there’s no one around who speaks English. The majority of the symbols we use will be Spanish letters (all new symbols will be in bold).

  8. Pronunciation Activity: Introduction: Read over this handout together in class. Explain that every day we will focus on two new consonants.

  9. Week 1: Introduction: Go over these one by one and have the students read the English side to you before you tell them what it is. Tell them not to tell you from their memory, but to read it off the page. This way you know whether or not they understand the pronunciation.

  10. Color by Number: This is just a fun practice assignment for colors and numbers.
