| Paper Mario: Thinner Mario, Bigger Adventure! By your website master, Jamey |
| Remember the commericials back in 2001 for Paper Mario? You know, those ones with Mario being chucked into a lake and floating because he was a slab of cardboard? Those commericials mark a mighty good game! Paper Mario's childish look may turn people off, but it's true alure lies inside the game, which was only the second Mario-centered game for the Nintendo 64. GRAPHICS: 8/10 The 2-D characters and objects aren't all that detailed, and the 3-D worlds are slightly better. Even though it doesn't bring out the full potential of it's game console, it still has surprisingly average graphics! You'll learn why I gave graphics an 8 instead of a 7 later on in the Game Control section. GAMEPLAY: 8/10 Another 8 out of 10, mostly because the storyline isn't very original. They could have had a different story line such as Super Mario RPG had, but I guess Nintendo wanted to go back to it's classic. Anyway, this game has 8 Party Members with their special abilities, many different worlds, and several things to collect, such as Star Pieces and Badges. This game even has a few sidequests, such as the Koopa Koot Errands and Toad Town Dojo. It even has some comic relief! GAME CONTROL: 10/10 All commands, menus, and abilities are easy to use. Even when walking, you don't have to worry about the messed up camera angles that you say in Super Mario 64, since the characters are 2-D and the world is 3-D! What's the point of having a rated E for Everyone game when everyone can't walk around without running into something they can't see because they're too busy fixing the camera to point straight forward (starts panting)? MUSIC/SOUND: 10/10 This has one of the best soundtracks on the Nintendo 64! Really! It's the kind you get stuck in your head and makes you want to download/buy the soundtrack! As far as sounds go, you can change the sounds of battle to anything you'd like, as long as you have the right materials. DIFFUCULTY: 10/10 This game has the perfect amount of diffuculty for all gamers! It has enough for children to get through every world and experts to keep their wheels churning until the very end! For instance, even I (an expert gamer) found myself slamming down the controller, figuring out how the heck you get through the Flower Fields' Color Platform Maze. REPLAY VALUE: 10/10 If you can beat this once, why not do it again? Sometimes, you just want to beat the game again, making sure you get everything in record time. No wonder why they give you four save files! OVERALL: 9.3/10 Paper Mario deserves this score! |
