Last Thing

She didn't know what had caused her to think of this. She had no clue what had gotten into her mind. Sure, he was cute. Sure, he was nice. But, it didn't give her any excuse. Not when she had made up her mind. She wasn't falling again. Not now, not for him.
She started walking down the street, the cold air nipping at her. This was the last thing she needed. She didn't need anyone, she was fine by herself. She was fine just spending her time lonely. It was the only way she knew that she wouldn't be hurt.
She kept trying to get the feelings out of her bloodstream. She didn't want to have those feelings. The longer they staid there, the more likely it was that she would turn around and try to get him in her life. And she didn't need that, she didn't need the pain. She didn't need him.
But, the butterflies wouldn't leave. They were talking to her stomach about taking up residence.
So, she stopped, leaning up against the cold brick wall. She tried to catch her breath. She tried to get everything under control. She tried to make sure she'd be ok. She could do all this by herself. She didn't need him, she'd never need him. She never needed anyone.
"Wait up!" She heard his New York accent call. She cursed silently. She hadn't been fast enough. She hadn't been upfront with the fact that she was alone and wanted to stay that way. She hadn't been smart enough to know that the moment he had stepped through the door that she should leave. Instead, she stayed. She laughed. She fell.
But, she didn't want to fall. It's hard to make sure the person will catch you. Just because he was chasing after her now didn't mean that he would catch her.
He walked up to her. "Hey, you left in a hurry." He said. "You ok?" He asked. He was trying to play a sympathy card. It wasn't going to work, not this time.
"No, I'm fine." She said, a hint of bitterness in her voice. "I just don't need this right now. This is the last thing I need right now." She said, starting off again.
Sometimes, when she was totally alone, she would wonder if her stone wall that had been built up wasn't fully helping her out. If maybe she was really getting hurt in the process. This time, she was sure she was.
So, in the middle of her walk, she turned around, her eyes catching his blue. Those blue eyes that she swore she wouldn't drown in.
And, he started walking to her. She didn't want to hurt him, he had to understand that. She didn't want to hurt him, but she didn't want to allow guys yet.
He wrapped his arms around her, and she thought to herself 'Maybe just this once, maybe just this once.' She thought, looking up at him.
He smiled. "There is a reason I keep my distance. I just don't think you'll understand. I don't need a boyfriend. I don't want to play the foolish girl." She said, seeing a tear in his eyes.
"I see." He said, as she broke out of his arms and started walking off again.
She had hurt him, she had been foolish, he had brought her down, and she hadn't followed her rule.
She had fallen, Eddie Cahill had caught her, but she was just fighting it.
