                                             Minoans

In 2600 BCE there lived a civilization on the island of Crete.  They were called the Minoans.  They got their name from a Greek god named King Minos

A famous story about him is
Theseus and the Minotaur.   It is about a mean king named King Minos who lived on the island of Crete. He terrorized the citizens of Athens.  Every year he would demand that they send over 12 of their children to feed the minotaur who lived in a maze under his palace.
One year, Prince Theseus of Athens heard about this and thought that this was awful.  He decided to go and fight the minotaur.  He told the citizens of Athens that if he was successful he would sail back with a white sail.
Once there, King Minos's daughter, Ariadne fell in love with Theseus and wanted to help him.  She gave Theseus three things to help him defeat the minotaur.  They were:
a torch, a ball of string, and a sword.  When Theseus entered the maze he was able to defeat the minotaur with the tools that Ariadne had given him.
Theseus saved the children of Athens.  On his way home he forgot to change the sail so his father thought he hadnt survived and killed himself.  Theseus was crowned king.

The Minoans liked to do many different activities.  One activity that children our age did was
bull jumping.  They also loved art and made many beautiful murals depicting their daily life.  It is through their art and architecture that we know about their life because we still cant read their writing.
