| Jaraman! Get in here. Yes sir? a young man says coming into the room. Finish stitching this up. And he throws a glance at a girl lying on the bed. Yes sir. Taking the needle from the other healer. Sitting down he winces when he sees the wound in her leg and starts sawing it together. Hes almost done when a hand grads his wrist and flings him away from the bed. Looking up the girl is awake and looking pissed. Who are you? Im Jaraman. What do you want? Well for starters, Id like to finish stitching that wound if you dont mind. he points at her leg, surprised at his own daring. Looking down at it she looks back at him. Fine. Sitting down again. Thank you. He says slightly sarcastic. Sitting down again he gets to work finishing the stitches, as she looks around the room. Wheres my sister? Who? The girl who was with me. Lifting his head up he looks around the room himself. Seeing a lump in one of the other beds, Thats probably her over there. Pointing at it. Check for me. Excuse me? Surprising him self again. Please. Getting up he walks over to the bed and lifts the covers to find another girl there. Shes here. Walking back over and picking up the needle again. It only takes a few more minutes to finish stitching. There, all done. Thank you. No problem. Backing away, he walks over to a cabinet and takes out some pills. Here take these. Handing her two. What are these? Theyll keep you from getting sick. Taking them from him she swallows them down. Taking a seat next to her he looks at her intently. Whats your name? Rem. Thatsnice. He says not really able to think of any other complement. Where am I? Your at Falas weyr. Wheres that? Its a weyr settled in group of lands off the coast of the continent. What continent? The Northern one. Seeing her puzzled look. You have no idea what Im talking about. Do you? No. she answers truthfully. Where did you to come from then? he asks. Remembering something he heard earlier, Youre the two that ended up in the mess hall earlier. Looking puzzled, Idont remember. Im sure of it. As long as one of us is. She says lying down. Right you sleep I have work I need to get to. Whatever. And she falls asleep. Getting up he goes to finish the other work he has to get done. * * * How long has she been sleeping there? the healer asks him much later that day. All day sir. Jaraman tells him. Well get her up. This is a healer hall not a barracks. But sir they dont have Thats not my concern. Yes sir. Nodding his head. Good. And the other healer leaves. Walking over to the bed he gently wakes her. What? Time to get up. We have to go. Where? Come on. as an idea comes to him. Wheres Right here. Her sister says popping out of nowhere. Now that he thought of it he hadnt heard a word out of her all day. Here take this. Handing her a cain. Youre going to need it for a little while. Taking them out of the healer hall he leads them a long way until they come to a set of rooms. Here we are. He says opening the door. Where are we? Rem asks. These are my quarters. You can stay here till morning then we can go talk to the headwomen about getting you your own. Agreed. Looking over at Rem. Alright. She replies absently. Good. You two can have the bed. Pointing at a set of curtains. Ill take the couch. Thank you. She says again heading toward the bed. Sitting down on the couch he begins to wonder what he has just gotten himself into, when the younger girl sits down in front of him and stares. Mind if I ask you some questions? he asks his curiosity starting to perk. Go ahead. Okay first can I get your name? Lenee. Okay, where are you two from? Icaren forest. Wheres that? I dont know what you mean. Where is it? Like on a map. I dont know. Okay, how did you get here. I dont know. We were running. I got tired. Rem picked me up and I fell asleep. Next thing I know I was here. That doesnt tell me a whole lot. He complains. She just shrugs her shoulders. Why where you running anyway? he asks. We were trying to escape. Escape? Yeah, we had a mean man after us. But he cant get to us here. Rem interrupts. Come on we should get to sleep. Night. Lenee says getting up. Oh, turning around whats your name? she asks and her sister blushes. Im sorry. She says quickly. Thats alright, my names Jaraman. He says smiling. Good night. he says nodding his head and smiling. The next morning he took them to see the headwomen and left them in her capable hands. Next |
