| They were walking one day, just like they did almost everyday, when he stops in the middle of the road. What? she asks noticing that hes stopped talking. Can you feel that? he asks. Feel what? not having any idea what hes taking about. Lets go. He says walking off the road and heading in a different direction. What are? and she doesnt bother to finish, following him she eventually sees smoke in the distance. Hurrying they come to a small village that has been ransacked. The huts are on fire, corpses litter the ground, and animals run loose. Why did you bring us hear? she asks looking down at him.
His pale color had returned several times since their first meeting, but it had always gone away. I dont he starts, but stops mid-sentence. Walking forward he stands over one of the corpses. Kneeling down he flips the body over. Coming down next to him, she sees that the man is still breathing if barely. Looking him over she sees there is nothing she can do. While looking at him a familiar white mist starts to rise from his body. What are you doing? she says turning to Pan. Hes dieing anyway. The boy protests. Please, I feel so tired. He continues begging her to understand. Not able to choose between them she just turns her head. Make it quick then. She says allowing him and she walks away. It doesnt take long. Soon the man is dead, and Pan has more color in his face. Finding Bethane, she is looking thoughtful. So that must be the trade off. She says eventually, looking up at him. What do you mean? he asks. Thats why you dont need food. You feed off of others. Thats why you look better now. She says noticing the change. Thats why I feel a strange pull when Im around you. Youre trying to feed off of me, but Im already dead. I dont have anything for you to feed off of. NoI he starts to say, but she just shakes her head. I dont take offence. Youve said before that you cant control it. Looking around the village, I think well head east today. She says with a complete change in tone. Why east? he asks a little nervously. Because thats where well find enough food to last you the rest of your life. She says standing and walking out of the village. For many days they travel. Till when one day they were walking over a hill and they find a battlefield before them. One side open and the other blocked off by a thick forest. Where are we? he asks confused. The Field of Battle. She answers simply. What is this place? he asks still confused. This is where armies and warriors come to face their enemies in battle. Every war there is has been faced here. A land condemned forever to be nothing but a graveyard. And in every battle there are those who are mortally wounded. This place should be able to keep you alive forever. She explains looking down at him. He simply looks down at the field below him, a feeling inside him telling him hes exactly where hes supposed to be. Looking up at her Will you stay? he asks. She merely smiles at him and nods her head; despite her best efforts she had grown to like the boy, and could no more leave him now then she could refuse him when he begged her to let him come with her. Smiling he grabs her hand and they walk down into the field. * * * One day when there was a battle going on as usual they walked through the field. With a plentiful energy source the boy had grown quite powerful. They had discovered that he could regenerate by absorbing the rotten flesh of dead men when he was run through on the end of a sword not long after they had come here. His strength had also increased showing more of his demon heritage. His white mist rose up all around as he feed off the dieing men all around him. On the edge of the field he saw a strange whirling light. Walking toward it two strange creatures flew out, a white one landing on his shoulder. The other, a red, flies over to Bethane and curls around her neck. What are these things? he asks her. I dont know. I cant say Ive ever seen anything like them. she says scratching the head of the one that had landed on her. But if I had to guess I would says that they come from there. And she points at the portal in front of them. |

| Hay. He says noticing something. I dont drain them. and it was true. While thinking about that Bethane pets the one on her shoulder. Noticing something she puts her hand on it. No heart beat. She says. There not alive. She tells him. Where did you two come from? she asks the little creature not fully expecting it to answer. It chirps at her and flies back toward the portal, after going through it the creature comes back out again and chirps at her. Well I figured that part out. She says and then shakes her head. Why am I talking to it? she asks herself. The creature chirps at her again, and flies toward the portal but changes course at the last minute and flies back to her. Am I to guess you want us to go in there? she asks. And the creature chirps. Walking over to the portal she looks at it closely. Are you sure we should do that? Pan asks. I cant imagine these little guys pulling us into a trap. She says running her hand along it. Besides what the point of being dead if you fear death. she says smiling at him. Alright then you first. He says. Baby. She retorts before stepping into the portal. Him following soon after. Next |
