My heritage

I am Jewish on both sides, as are both of my parents, and their parents, and their parents, etc., etc., etc. My mother's side is Romanian-Polish and came to the US at the end of the 1800s. My father's side is Romanian-Austrian-Russian-Spanish. So, I am mainly Ashkenazy (Eastern European Jewish) but also partly Sephardic (Hispanic Jewish).

My mother's parents. The photograph was probably taken in the 1970s. They were both born in the US, and lived in New York for most of their lives but retired to Florida before I was born. My grandmother cooked fantastic potato knishes and my grandfather made homemade toys and invented games. My father's mother's family, who came here from Europe. Seated to the left is my great-uncle Harry; my great-grandfather is seated to the right. Standing from left to right: my grandmother, my great-uncle Nat and my great-aunt Ray. This was the 1920s, already after they had come to the US. My great-grandmother had already passed away, in an influenza epidemic, before this picture was taken.
