Born in 1921 and hailing from Chappell, Nebraska, Max Wright completed pilot training at Williams Field, Arizona, on 12 April 1943. Assigned to fly Lockheed P-38 Lightnings, the 22 year-old lieutenant joined the 14th Fighter Group at the end of July, still with fewer than 300 hours total time. During the next nine months in the Mediterranean Theater, Wright engaged in six dogfights with Luftwaffe aircraft. As a first Lieutenant in the groups 48th Fighter Squadron, he was flying form Triolo Airfield, Italy, at the beginning of 1944. His first combat occurred in the morning of 7 January when he shot down an Me-110 during a mission to Weiner Neustadt, Austria the only victory credited to his squadron that day. |

| From then on, Wright specialized in shooting down German aircraft when other members of the 48th went scoreless. On 30 January he shot down a FW-190 in the Udine area of northern Italy and on 23 February he claimed one of the units two probable victories. By March, Wright was a captain. He got one of the 48s two Me-109s on the 29th and was the only pilot to return with a claim the next day another 109, over Bulgaria. Wright closed his scoring on 3 April, bagging an Me-210 near Budapest. To no ones surprise, it was the 48th Squadrons only victory. Wright returned to the U.S. later that month, but further details of his career are unknown. Tally record: 5 confirmed and one probable Decorations: Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 14 Oak Leaf Clusters |
