Meet Mt. Etna in Sicily, Italy!
This is a picture of Mt. Etna on an extraordinary clear day!!  The picture was taken from the balcony of our apartment in Motta S. Anastasia.  You can see a little bit of the town in the background.  Many Americans nicknamed this town "Little America" because so many Americans live here!!
When we first moved to Sicily, we had to find a house.  This was one of the houses we could afford, thanks to the US Navy!!  Just kidding.  This was a house that was swallowed up by one of Mt. Etna's previous eruptions!
This picture was taken on Mt. Etna.  I believe this is one of her smaller craters.  Thankfully it was inactive when we were visiting!!  All the white stuff is not smoke, it was just a cloudy day when we were there.  I believe Mt. Etna is about 10,000 ft above sea level!
In October of 2002, Mt Etna lost her top, literally!!  She began spewing ash (lots and lots of ash) and only at night could we see her spew lava.  If you look closely, there are actually two plumes of ash rising from the volcano.  A large plume of darker ash about half way down the mountain and a smaller, white plume at the very top of the mountain.  During this eruption, the volcano spew ash and lava from two different craters.   This pictures were taken from our house near Mineo.
As you can tell, we are a safe distance way from Mt. Etna.
That's not just plain dirt covering everything, that's ash.  As few days after Mt. Etna begans its eruption, Kyle and I went for a drive and was shocked to see just how much ash had fallen.  It covered everything.  It reminded me of snow, except this stuff was all black!!
