Within the Walls of Jerusalem

Within the Walls of Jerusalem

A Personal Perspective

How is Ruth Fogelman's book different from all other books?

This book is a present-day account of Jewish life in the Old City of Jerusalem. Ruth Fogelman invites us to her home, and her home is the Old City. She opens a door for the reader into her family home, and a window onto the community of the Jewish Quarter. With warmth and an up-beat rhythm, Ruth blends her personal story with the story of her community and with the story of all of Israel. She blends history, both ancient and recent, with present-day reality, and makes the ancient synagogues and buildings throb with the excitement of present-day celebrations.

Her lens focuses on the meetings of East and West: Ashkenazi with Sephardi or Yemenite; on the meeting ground between tradition and modernity, between history and the present, and where even night meets day. Her book includes photographs of sunrise where the crescent moon welcomes the light of a new day.
