Taking a Chance

By Lori

Kat Walker-Reed set down some drinks on a table and smiled at the customers before walking back to the bar.

Excuse me miss? Kat turned around and saw Shawn Douglas sitting at the bar.

Hi Brady. Long time no see.

Kat? I didnt know you worked here.

Yeah for about six months now.

Really? Oh.

Shawn D? The redhead sitting next to Shawn Douglas said. Arent you going to introduce us?

Thats not necessary. I know you already Jeannie.

You do? Jeannie Donovan looked a little surprised that this girl knew who she was.

Youre Jeannie Donovan, my stepfathers cousin.

Stepfather?

Yeah. Jeannie this is Kat Walker-Reed.

Oh God you must think Im such a ditz. I cant believe I didnt recognize you.

Its okay. Its been a while since weve seen each other. Hows Shane?

Hes good. Getting really big. Hes with his dad tonight.

His dad? Oh Ben DiMera right?

Right.

Anyway can I get you something to drink. I cant serve alcohol. Ill have to get Donna for that but if you want a soda Im your girl.

You know what a soda would be great. I didnt get much sleep last night. Shanes teething so alcohol would have me asleep within minutes.

Okay one soda. Brady?

Im driving so Ill have a soda too.

Ok. Kat filled up two glasses with coke and set them down in front of the two. Anything else just let me know.

Will do.

Kat walked away to serve her other tables and Jeannie snorted.

What? Sean Douglas asked.

I now know why I didnt remember Kat.

Why is that?

Cause I make it a point to forget trash.

Jeannie.

Shawn D that girl is trash, okay? Her mother is trash, I dont know what Eric sees in her, and her father cant keep his pants zipped.

Youre being really unfair.

Why cause Im calling a spade a spade?

No because you dont even know this girl and already youve decided shes trash. I happen to think shes perfectly nice.

Really?

Yes, really.

Well to each his own. You know Im suddenly not hungry. You mind if we go?

Sure. Shawn Douglas put some money down to cover the drinks and a tip and then followed his cousin out of the club.

Later that night near closing time Shawn Douglas walked back into the Blue Note and over to the bar.

Excuse me? he said to the bartender.

Yeah?

Is Kat still here?

Yeah shes in back. Who should I say is asking?

Shawn Douglas Brady.

Okay just a minute. The bartender disappeared into the kitchen and Shawn Douglas drummed his fingers against the bar top.

Hey Brady. Whats up? Kat asked as she walked to stand in front of him.

I was just wondering something.

Whats that?

Would you like to go out with me?

You sure you want to be seen with someone your cousin sees as trash?

What?

Please I know Jeannie hates me. Are you sure you want to be seen with me?

I like to form my own opinions on people and from all Ive seen youre the furthest thing from trash Ive ever met.

Oh really?

Yeah. So what do you say? Will you go out with me?

Alright. When?

Friday?

Okay. I think you know my address?

Yeah I know it. Six okay?

Fine. Ill see you then.

Bye. Shawn Douglas left the club and Kat sighed. Shed been wondering when he was gonna do that.
