"Kay!"
Kay Kelly turned around and smiled at her boyfriend, Tommy Devereaux, who was fast approaching her.
"Hi Tommy." Kay smiled shyly.
"What are you doing for your birthday tonight?"
"Daddy and Mom are taking me and Kimmy to the Penthouse for dinner."
"Any chance you can make it another night?"
"Why?"
"Cause I wanna take you out."
"Okay. I'll talk to my mom and let you know."
"Great."
-------------------------------------------------
"Mom?" Kay shouted as she walked into the Kelly household. "Are you home?"
"I'm in the kitchen." Sammi yelled back.
Kay walked to the back of the house where here mother was. "Hi Mom."
"Hi Sweetie." Sammi smiled. "Did you have a good day at school?"
"Yeah. Uh Mom I was kinda wondering something."
"OK. What is it?" "I know you and Daddy were planning on taking me and Kimmy to dinner tonight but I was wondering if we could go tomorrow night or this weekend."
"Why?"
"Cause Tommy wants to take me out." Kay admitted with a blush.
"Oh." Sammi smiled "Well I guess rescheduling's not a problem."
"Mom you're the best." Kay said giving her mother a hug.
"Yes I know. Now go call Tommy and tell him you two have a date this evening."
"Good idea."
------------------------------------------------
Tommy paced the living room of the Devereaux house back and forth as his sister Abby watched with an amused expression.
"Tommy you're gonna wear a hole in the carpet and Mom will kill you."
"Don't you have some Kiriakis boy to harass?" Tommy asked.
"Very funny."
"Sorry Ab."
"I know you're nervous so it's okay."
"Thanks." The phone rang and Tommy dove for it. "Hello?"
"Tommy? It's Kay."
"Hi. So?"
"It's a go."
"Great! I'll pick you up and Kay?"
"Yeah?"
"Could you wear a dress and put your hair up?"
"Why?"
"It's a surprise."
"Tommy I don't like surprises. The last one I got involved seeing my sister and Eli Reed in bed together."
"You'll like this one I swear. Abby helped me with it."
"Oh God."
"Just be ready by seven, okay?"
"Okay. I'll see you at seven."
"Great. Bye Kay."
"Bye Tommy." Kay hung up with her boyfriend and sat for a few seconds before panic set in. Oh good lord, what was she gonna wear? She picked the phone up again and dialed.
"Hello?"
"Mickey, it's Kay. Is Lyssa there?"
"Sure Kay hold on." A few minutes later and she heard Lyssa's voice on the other end.
"Hello?"
"Lyssa, it's Kay."
"Hey Kay. What's up?"
"I need help."
"With what?" Lyssa asked.
"Tommy wants to take me out tonight for my birthday and I have no clue what we're doing but he wants me to wear a dress."
"Wow that does sound serious." Lyssa said. "So what do you need help with?"
"Everything."
"Do you wanna go shopping?"
"Yes." Kay said emphatically.
"Okay. I'll call Faith so she can come with us and maybe bring a couple of her dresses over in case we don't find anything."
"I can't wear any of Faith's dresses."
"Why not?"
"Her hemlines for one."
"Okay then we'll just go do a little shopping, okay? Calm down Kay it's gonna be fine."
"Easy for you to say. Laurie never went out with Brady."
"No but Kimmy did try to seduce him."
"I'm sorry Lyssa. I wasn't thinking." Kay said once she heard her cousin's tone.
"It's okay. Laurie's always telling me I need a thicker skin."
"Your skin's just fine. Hurry up and come over. You're gonna give me a hand with picking a dress that will knock Tommy's socks off."
"Yes I am." Lyssa said before the cousins hung up.
------------------------------------------------
"God the only time I ever come here is with Grandma Marlena." Kay commented.
"Gran brings me here once a year on my birthday." Lyssa said, referring to Laura Horton, as the two walked into the very ritzy Bartlett's Department Store.
"Are you sure we should be here?"
"Why not? We've shopped here before." Lyssa said as the two headed for the dress section.
"I know but only with our grandmothers. We should have gone to Barron's or Simone." Kay said naming the other department store in Salem and a dress shop.
"No we shouldn't have. Look I'm a Horton, my family practically runs University Hospital and you my dear are a Kelly. Uncle Franco kept Bella in business for a long time and without your mother Lucas would've run Titan into the ground and a long time ago and you, I, and everyone else knows it."
"Fair enough. C'mon, Mom gave me her credit card before I left."
"So what exactly are you looking for?"
"Something nice but tasteful."
"In short something that you'd never see in Riley Reed's closet."
"Lyssa!"
"What? The girl has a major attitude not to mention a major jones for your older brother."
"Well although Roman won't admit it I think it's mutual."
"Really?" Lyssa held up a green dress for Kay's approval. Kay wrinkled her nose and shook her head. "I thought Roman still wanted Kat."
"I think Roman finally wised up and realized Kat was so in love with Shawn D she couldn't see straight."
"Well who in their right mind wouldn't be in love with Shawn D?" Lyssa asked.
"Well me for one." Faith's voice said as she walked up.
"Hi Faith." Kay said as she took out a long gray silk dress and held it up to herself as she considered her image in the mirror.
"Hey Fab, what's up?" Lyssa said.
"Nothing much. Hey Lyssa you didn't tell anyone what your last name was did you?"
"Nobody asked, why?"
"Cause they've been wary of Hortons ever since Aunt Julie shoplifted when she was a teenager."
Lyssa rolled her eyes and the three girls giggled as they continued to shop.
----------------------------------------------
Kay turned around in the mirror and smiled at her reflection timidly. Deciding she needed a male opinion she opened the door to her room and went down the hall to her brother Roman's room.
"Roman? Are you in there?" She called.
"Just a sec." Her brother's voice called. Kay raised an eyebrow as she heard a thump but figured Roman just dropped something. "Okay c'mon in."
Kay opened the door and walked into her brother's room. "Roman what do you think?"
"Of what?"
"Nuclear war. Hello? My dress. Do you like it?"
"Oh. Yeah Kay you look amazing. Where are you going?"
"Out with Tommy." Kay smiled.
"Tonight? Mom and Dad went for that?"
"Yep. Mom was pretty cool about it."
"Surprising."
"Very. I gotta go finish getting ready so I'll see ya later."
"Have fun Kay."
"I will. Thanks again Roman." Kay said as she left the room shutting the door behind her. Roman waited till he heard her bedroom door shut before he said,
"You can come out now."
Riley Reed cautiously stepped out of Roman's closet wearing nothing but his bed sheet and a smile. "I thought she'd never leave."
"You and me both."
Riley shed her bed sheet and crawled back across the bed to Roman as they resumed their activities.
----------------------------------------------
"Kay? Can I come in?"
"Sure Mom." Kay said as she looked up from where she was putting her purse together.
Sammi stepped into the room and looked at her daughter. "Oh look at you."
"What?" Kay looked down at herself in alarm.
"Nothing you just look so beautiful."
Kay blushed slightly. "Thanks Mom."
"Here I was saving this for tonight at dinner but your dad and I decided to give them to you and Kimmy now since dinner won't be till Sunday."
"What is it?"
"Open it and find out."
So Kay did and when she saw what was in the box she gasped. Oh Mom its beautiful.
Do you really like them?
I love them. Kay picked the pearls up from the box they lay in.
Your father I and decided that you and your sister were old enough to have something grown-up and we couldnt think of anything more grown-up then your own set of pearls.
Thank you Mom. Wheres Daddy?
He is giving Kimmy her pearls. Sammi tucked Kays hair behind her ear. I was so happy the day you were born because it seemed like such miracle. A twin having twins. I was named for my aunt and you and Kimmy were named for your great-aunts.
Does that mean if Kimmy or I have twins we should name them Carrie and Nicole?
Well see.
Hey Kay? Kays youngest brother Frank poked his head in. Tommys here and Happy Birthday.
Thanks Frank. Looking back at the pearls. Mom Im gonna save these for Saturday, if thats okay.
Thats fine baby. Have fun tonight.
I will. Kay smiled as she carefully put down the jewelry box before picking up her purse and heading downstairs.
-----------------------------------------------
So do I get to know where were going yet?
No not yet. Tommy smiled as he and Kay walked along.
Well if Id known we were gonna be doing walking I wouldve worn sneakers instead of heels. A soft breeze blew off the water and lifted the free strands of Kays hair from her neck.
"It's not to much further. In fact we're here." Tommy stopped in front of a stand that said Boat Rentals.
"Boat rentals?" Kay asked giving Tommy a look.
"Yep."
"Where are we going exactly that we need a boat to get there?"
"Smith Island."
"Smith Island?" Kay had only been out there once before for Aunt Carrie and Uncle Mike's anniversary party. "Why?"
"Because that is where I have everything waiting."
Before Kay could say a word, Pete the boat guy walked onto the scene. "Mr. Horton, your keys." He said handing Tommy a set of keys. "Have fun tonight you two."
"Thanks Pete. We will." Tommy said as he led Kay down the dock to the boat they were taking and helped her in.
"You do know how to drive one of these things right?" Kay said as Tommy started the boat up.
"Been doing it since I was nine. Grandpa Bill showed me how."
"Just checking."
"Kay relax. This is going to be a great night."
Famous last words Kay thought as Tommy pulled the boat away from the dock and started toward Smith Island.
-----------------------------------------------
"Tommy this is beautiful." Kay said softly as he led her into the cabin and she looked around.
"I'm glad you like it."
The cabin was lit by candle light and decorated in lace and satin.
"Hungry?"
"Yes actually." Kay said.
"This way." Tommy said leading her to a table.
"Thank you." Kay said as he pulled out her seat for her and she sat down.
"My pleasure." He said as he sat down across from her. "So what do you think we'll be eating?"
"Well if you or Abby cooked I'm guessing toast." Kay teased.
"Very funny." Tommy said as he took away the cover from their food.
"Wow. Double decker cheeseburgers, cheese fries, chocolate shakes, and buffalo wings. All my favorites."
"All from Johnny Angels." Tommy said. "Dig in."
"With pleasure."
----------------------------------------------
"Dinner was wonderful. What else do you have planned?" Kay asked.
"Well we could watch a movie. I have Killing Mrs. Tingle, Varsity Blues, and Muppets from Outer Space."
Kay blushed. "How did you know I liked that movie?"
"I saw it in your room last time I was over."
"Ahh. Well actually I'm not in a movie watching mood."
"So what do you want to do?"
"Do we have music?"
"Uh yeah. You wanna dance?"
"Don't look so surprised. We have danced before."
"In crowded places with our family and friends around us. Never alone."
"First time for everything." Kay said before Tommy nodded in agreement and went to the CD player. Turning it on a song Kay didn't recognize wafted from the speakers.
You can say you love me
And I'll believe that's true
Trusting you is easy
'Cause I believe in you
There is nothing I would miss
As long as we're in love like this
"I don't believe Abby." Tommy said shaking his head.
"What?"
"This song? Every time it plays Mom drags Dad onto the nearest dance floor. I can't tell you how many times I've come home to find them slow dancing in the living room."
"Guess it's our turn." Kay took Tommy's hand and pulled him into a small clearing in the center of the room.
All I have is all I need
And it all comes down to you and me
How far away this world becomes
In the harbor of each other's arms
I feel like I've known you forever and ever
Baby, that's how close we are
Right here with you is where my life has come together
And where love has filled my heart
You know I'd go anywhere
As long as I have you to care
"You have to admit this is a nice song." Kay said.
"Agreed." Tommy said playing a loose strand of Kay's hair.
Ooh- and with the love you bring
I never want for anything
I found what I've been searching for in you
"Tommy this night has been amazing." Kay said as Tommy walked her to her door later that night.
"I'm glad. That was the idea. But before you go, this is for you." Tommy hand her a small jewelry box.
"Tommy after everything you did tonight you didn't have to get me a present."
"Yeah I did. Open it."
Kay opened the box and and gasped. "Tommy." She lifted the cross out by the chain and looked at it.
"It's like the one Natalie Wood wore in West Side Story."
"I love it."
"I love you."
Kay looked at him and smiled. "I love you too."
"Happy birthday Baby."
