Faarooq is a college football legend who went on to become a legend in sports entertainment. Faarooq is the greatest defender in Florida State University's history -- that's according to the official FSU Web site -- and he's the school's first two-time consensus All-American.
His gridiron days behind him, Faarooq turned to wrestling, and soon proved he had a knack for the squared circle as well. In fact, in 1992, while competing in WCW, Faarooq defeated Vader to become the World Heavyweight Champion, the first African-American competitor to win that distinction. Faarooq was proof-positive that the "glass ceiling" could be broken. He was a hero, particularly in the African-American community, and his photo emblazoned the covers of Jet and Ebony magazines, among others.

A few years later, Faarooq debuted in World Wrestling Entertainment. In October 1998, he  teamed with Bradshaw -- another brawler with a background in football -- to form the Acolytes (they later evolved into the APA). They tagged for almost three and a half years, went their separate ways for a time, and reunited in the summer of 2003. With their longevity as a tag team and their three reigns as World Tag Team Champions, the APA will go down as one of the best tag teams in WWE history.

At this point, whatever honors Faarooq achieves -- in singles or tag team -- can be considered gravy. He long ago solidified his status as one of the all-time greats. No one can discount Faarooq's contributions to the sports-entertainment industry.
