My Gameboy CollectionJerry Terrifying's Favorite GamesSega Saturn NetlinkMGS for the PS1 Versus MGS:TTS for the GCNNintendo 64 ControllerMGS for the PS1 Versus MGS:TTS for the GCNTop^
This is the single dorkiest thing I've ever written on a message board. Every now and then I see this question pop up on MGS forums and such and this is the most I've ever typed out in regards to how I feel. I've decided to save it as I've included links to video supporting my argument!
As a hardcore MGS fan I say get it for the ps1. It and its sequels have the same feel, style, humor and direction style making it all flow smoother as a series. However there's still a place for TTS. It's a fun addition to the series. It tried to breathe new life and flair into an amazing game. One of the things that pissed me off is they took out the VR Missions all together. They should have made this like Integral with the 300 plus VR Missions and maybe even throwing in the ability to play in First Person View.
As I've said a million times on this or the ps1 board there are a few scenes and lines that they completely destroyed. Things about Metal Gear that made it special to me as an individual. They ruined the scene where Gray Fox slices up the guards creeped me out, and Raven's line about the muk tuk eating contest made me LOL.
Original Gray Fox Hallway scene.
WOW! Feel the atmosphere, you walk in, what the hell happened?! Some bleeding guy says it's a ghost what the hell? You hear gunshots, you walk around the corner and some corpse is floating in the air for no reason, his lifeless body slams to the ground then BAM! It's a robot ninja! The sound effects and music and direction are amainzg in that scene
My biggest gripe is they leave in the line "It's a ghost!" No it's not, you can see it's a robot ninja, you're impaled on his sword not his magical ectoplasm.
Here in The Twin Snakes it's still pretty freakin awesome, but for a different reason. It's just robot ninja mayhem. Which is cool but it's not mysterious, it creates no mood, no mystery. I mean in the original every 5 seconds you're like what the hell's going on? You've got some guy having a heart attack for no reason, you get out of the cell and some woman has you at gun point while there's some naked dude ass up in the corner, you have a halucination seeing Mantis the leather bondage freak floating in front of the elevator, you have a gun fight get interupted by a robot ninja, another heart attack, and then there's freakin ghosts on top of all that? What the hell man?! No just that robot ninja. Then a nerd wets himself! There's more comparisions I could argue as to my personal prefference but that one with the Gray Fox scene is the one I feel strongest about. That was the first time a game scared me, this was the first game to move me and the game that changed the way I thought about games as an art form and form of entertainment.
Either way both games are great. As a fan of MGS I say get the original first play the other two then get TTS. I may not preffer it but that doesn't mean I think it's unplayable trash. I still like it and play it from time to time. I just like the direction, style, mood and flow of things in the original as it fits with the rest of the series. The thing TTS lacked was kojima plain and simple
Nintendo 64 ControllerTop^
The Nintendo 64 controller is a turd. There I've got that out of the way, now let me explain why, I'll even mention the few good aspects first. The N64 controller was the first controller boxed with a console with an analoque stick. Ok now that the good has been highlighted lets move on.
The revolutionary analog stick is massively flawed. After some use the plastic wears down and the stick becomes loose making it a bad stick for precision control. Also now that the console is well over ten years old it's pretty hard to find a controller with a good analoque stick.
Another innovation seen in the N64 controller is its expansion slot. There's a ton of junk you can jam in your slot if you want to, most of it optional. There's the Gameboy transfer pack which I believe can only be used with Pokemon Stadium and its sequel. There's the rumble pack, another innovative feature. The rumble pak was a good idea, but suffered poor execution. It should have been built into the controller not jammed in its slot dangling out of the bottom. Also I'm not 100% o this but I think the thing takes batteries which is a huge flaw if true. And lastly a memory expansion. The memory expansion was mostly used for third party games like Castelvania 64 which was the only way you could save your game.
Now I don't know about you but me I've only got two hands. So can you explain to me why the N64 controller was designed for three handed mutants? This is the main reason this controller is a turd. I've seen people handle this thing in strange bizarre ways. Some people will hold ot by the two handles on the outside using the left thumb to work the stick and the right hand middle finger to handle the Z button. This is insane and uncomfortable. If you hold it the intended way, one hand is lower and the other hand held further up this is assymetrical and also slightly awkward. This thing being designed for 3D games there are four face buttons called C buttons. C for camera. Which showed some slight forethought by the developers. What should have been included was a second stick however. The Gamecube has a C stick, obviously someone at Nintendo eventually figured this out too.
Actually every controller from that generation on with analog sticks has two sticks to make camera control much more natural and smooth. The only exception being the Dreamcasst controller which despite a second stick still worked great. The Dual Shock, Gamecube and Xbox controllers are all basically the same. The only differences being button shape, size, placement and amount of shoulder buttons. I like the Xbox's triggers but it lacks two shoulder buttons which gave birth to the awkward Black and White buttons. The Gamecube almost gets it right with that Z button but why isn't there a simmilar button on the left hand side of the controller? And what is up with the differing sizes and shapes on its face buttons? It's very comfortable to hold but those face buttons are the biggest flaw. The A button doesn't need to be so huge. The Dual Shock 2 a great controller and has some pretty awesome pressure sensitive buttons which allow for some great precision control.
Sega Saturn NetlinkTop^
The Sega Saturn, one of video gamings sexiest consoles, comes with an expansion slot on the back. One of the least known but coolest expansions is the Netlink Adapter. A 28.8 modem that allows for online multiplayer. There's very little mention of the Netlink adapter anywhere on the internet. There's a brief mention on wikipedia and hardly any info on youtube. So that's why I made these videos giving a brief introduction and showing the first actual online play on youtube! Howeve another member of the Saturn League, a site dedicated to finding players to play on the Netlink, has made much better quality videos. But I'm gonna yell and scream about getting there first.
Jerry Terrifying's Favorite Games:A series of mini reviewsTop^
People make a lot of top ten lists. I tried and failed! There are just to damn many games I love! I could have tried to trim this down and just list the best of the best, but well these are the best. These are by no means at all even close to being in order. As Lost Vikings and MGS2 would definitely be at the top if it were. I'll definitely keep adding more of these mini reviews, I might have to make a mini review page and keep it more organized but for now this'll do as a listing of my personal favorite games.
Street Fighter 2010 - Nintendo
Street Fighter, great series of fighting games, you like most other people probably instantly think of Street Fighter II and any one of its millions of versions. When I found this game I thought...what the hell is Street Fighter doing on the NES and in the year 2010? Well this isn't a fighting game its a fairly difficult and dare I say awesome Platformer. After Capcom made Street Fighter they didn't know what to do with the license. Final Fight was originally planned to be Street Fighter II and the Nintnedo got this futuristic sequel. In it Ken has grown tired of Dragon Punching Ryu's ass all over the world and became a scientist. One day his lab partner is killed by some Aliens and Ken dons his cyber suit as he's no longer the Street Fighting champion and a little rusty and chases the aliens across the universe.
I love the gameplay. You can climb all over the walls, drop down and climb up the levels. You can punch and kick and when do you launch little energy projectiles...probably something derived from the hadouken. You gain power ups to increase the distance your projectiles go. Very fun game. Even better if you're a fan of Ken, mullets and cybernetic power suits.
Ninja Gaiden - Nintendo
Another platformer on the NES. I picked it up one day for $3. All I needed to know was it had ninjas. I was not disappointed. This is one of the earlier games to not only have amazing gameplay but to feature cut scenes and a great story. Can't recommend it enough. Keep in mind this game is pretty hard and if you're a fan of old games you probably all ready know about those fucking eagles in the snow level. I've only ever made it to the second to last boss. I do hope to beat this one someday.
The Lost Vikings - Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis
This is my all time favorite game! It's a puzzle platformer on the SNES , Sega Genesis and Gameboy Advance. I've got the SNES and Genesis versions of the game. The SNES wins hands down on grounds of amazing super hard rocking sound track. The Genesis version makes up for it by having an extra level. The other main selling point is the diologue between the Vikings. Hilarious! Very well written. The gameplay is great. You control three Vikings that were kidnapped by an evil alien and lost in time. The point of the game is to find the alien, kick his ass and get back home to seriously rock the fuck out. Best Game ending ever. This is the best co-op game of all time. To progress you have to navigate all 3 Vikings to the end of each level. You can do this with two players which is a blast! I'm not sure but I think with a multitap you can have three players.
The Lost Vikings 2 - Super Nintendo
Nothing really new or amazing here, but if you loved the first one you will love this version on the SNES. There's a version on the PS1 and Sega Saturn. I originally bought the PS1 version becuase I couldn't find a cheap copy of the SNES version. The PS1 Norse by Norsewest the Lost Vikings 2...is well yeah. Not on my list. It has slightly enhanced visuals and horrible cutscenes with terrible voice acting. This is pre Metal Gear Solid voice acting..before it was taken too seriously. I much preffered the SNES grapgics and diologue bubbles over that horrendous voice acting. Eventually for $15 I snagged a copy of the SNES version Lost Vikings 2 and it just felt right and quickly became a favorite game of mine. This game adds two new characters that you can play on certain stages. Same story. The Aliens back and wants revenge but he won't have it! The New characters are just as likeable as the Vikings and have simmilar but slightly different abilities than the Vikings.
Yakuza - Playstation 2
The past few years I've started getting into Sega and their amazing games. This is the newest Sega game I've played and I loved it. It's the first 3d brawler I've played and actually liked. You're a Yakuza member and you get set up for murder, when you get out of prison ten years later things have changed and you better beleive there's plenty of faces to punch to set shit straight. There's 10 Million yen on the line, the fate of an orphaned girl and a shamed detective. Great story line, great gameplay and just an all around fun experience. I've got Yakuza 2 but I haven't gotten around to playing it, I hear it improves upon the original. Can't wait!
The only thing I didn't like was some of the swearing. I don't have a problem with swearing itself it's just in this game the Voice acting isn't really the best and you notice it the most when they say fuck a million times and making it sound very forced. That's the only complaint I had with the game.
The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind - Xbox, PC
This game has a lot of fans and now I see why! I first played Oblivion which took me a long time to get into...but eventually after smoking some dope I did and fell in love. So naturally I bought an Xbox to try this game out(I know PC version, mods etc but I'm a console gamer sorry). I tracked down Morrowing GOTY version and gave it a shot. Got my ass handed to me by a rat on the first mission. Wow. It took me a while to get used to the combat. I liked the Oblivion combat more because it was more realisitc. There's no way in hell I can take a sowrd, cleave it into a giant rats head and not kill it every time no matter how much of a sword newb I am. If I put sharp steel into he skull of a rat it will die 100% of the time. But after some leveling up I was good to go! I love this game way more than Oblivion! The world and atmosphere is much more immersive...in this game I find myself looking for books to read to get into the lore of Morrowind. It's great. I like that there's no fast travel..sure I could just not use it...but knowing its there I always used it. This way I'm forced to trek all across the country side but I love it...and you never know what you'll run into.
Metal Gear Solid 2:The Sons of Liberty - Playstation 2, Xbox, PC
This game seriously contends for my all time favorite. I only give it up to the Lost Vikings because of Nostatlgia which tips the scales ever so slightly. Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty has what I consider to be the best storyline in all of video gaming history. I love the gameplay and the ideas presented. I also have a pretty decent Metal Gear collection as this is my favorite series. It's hard to pick one game out of the series to represent them all. I think MGS3 has the best gameplay in the entire series but this game is just a fucking masterpiece. Digital crack, digital art. Love it.
Shenmue - Dreamcast
This is the game I bought my Dreamcast for. Which is why I was so pissed when I had so much trouble playing this game. Some of the discs are faulty and tons of people have had the same problem. To play it I had to flip my Dreamcast upside down. Besides that the game was pretty amazing. This was the first ultra detailed game world. Games like Grand Theft Auto ust have taken a lot of inspiration from it. The citizens live their daily lives and maintain schedules. Some people play just to see the world and mess around with its inhabitants. It's a shame that I didn't get around to playing this until sometime in 2008..I had always wanted to play it when it came out originally. The story is amazing and was meant to span many many games. Sadly they only made it up to Shenmu II which at the end of that game is when the story really starts to pick up. So if the story is just starting at the end of the second game how many games would it have spanned? We'll probably never know.
The only complaints I have about this game is the pacing. You really don't start to pick up speed until the later half of the second disc of the three disc game. There's not much along the lines of combat and you will get good at driving the forklifts. Which as someone that's spend years working in a warehouse they did get forklift operation wrong. In the game you lift the freight up into your line of sight and drive with the forks all the way up. WRONG! In the real world you keep the freight about 2-4 inches off the ground and if you can't see over it you drive backwards. Carrying all that weight that up high would make those lifts tip over way to easily. It just irked me in an other wise very realistic game. But what's Yu Suzuki know about operating a fork lift?
Duck Tales - Nintendo
Another NES platformer. Select a stage, a lot like in Mega Man, beat stage and get rich! Excellent control and gameplay and some of the best music ever heard on the NES.
Super Mario RPG - Super Nintendo
This is the first RPG I ever played. Which was a nice introduction to the genere. It has all the trappings of JRPGs. Turn based battling, levels, HP, MP and all that. You start the game as Mario battling Bowser and all is going well. Then Smitty shows up and hell breaks loose. Great characters are introduced in this Squar RPG. Mallow and Geno are still some of my favorite game characters of all time and should have been in Smash Brothers Brawl. It's an easy game wich might turn off some of the hardcore RPG players out there...but it's fucking Mario and Bowser and the Princess join your party! Come on now! Also keep an eye out for Link, he makes a small cameo.
Zelda Links Awakening DX - Gameboy Color
I like 2d Zelda games. And the best 2d Zelda games are for the Gameboy. Link to the Past was my first Zelda and I do love it but there's just something charming about Link's Awakening. The characters are great the puzzles are plentiful. It's an easy and short game but still a great classic. The DX version for gameboy color has a color based exclusive dungeon that can only be played on the Gameboy Color/GBA/GBA Player. I loved the story and the gameplay in this Zelda more than any others. You can jump...jumping Link is the best link.
Panzer Dragoon - Sega Saturn
There's not to much to say about this short game. It was the first 32 bit game I ever played. Way back when my Uncle at the time had a Shiny new Sega Saturn and three games. Myst, Revolution X Featuring Aerosmith and of course Panzer Dragoon. I was hooked! I'd go over to my Aunt's house to play this game for hours on end. It's a rail shooter, if you've played Star Fox you know what to expect. You ride a dragon and are armed with a laser pistol. You're sucked into riding this Dragon to stop an evil dragon. I've still yet to beat it as I've just got it again after almost 15 years. I understand it's just five levels. But man is this game fucking fun and beautiful to boot.
Duke Nukem 3d - Sega Saturn:
I've really gotten into the Sega Saturn lately. Check out my Netlink videos also on this page. I got this game just to use with my new Netlink and man I fell in love with this game instantly. As soon as I booted it up and heard Duke say "Those alien bastards are gonna pay for shooting up my ride!" or something close to that I fell in love. The one liners harken to Bruce Campbell's Ash character. Expect to hear Groovy and Bitchin' often. This game is amazing. Before one boss fight Duke proclaimed he'd rip the boss' head off and shit down his neck, boy was I surprised after the fight when Duke ripped his head off, dropped his pants, pulled out a newspaper and proceeded to take a dump down the dead foes neck. That was a real wow moment. You can give the strippers cash which will make Duke say "Shake it baby." Amazing. The game's just charming and full of character.
The Netlink modes are what make this game shine. You can have two player co-op which is fucking fun and have a Duke Match which is just a two player death match. The Duke match moved way to fast for me and was a turn off personally and it's only two players...you can turn the aliens on or off to have something else shooting at you to make it a little more interesting. Watch my videos on youtube about The Netlink and Duke Nukem. I wish I had played this game back in the day...I knew it was a classic but I was never huge on FPS games. Boy did I miss out!
Snatcher - Sega CD
This is another wow game. I wish I knew about it erlier. The story line is amaizng! So much so that it's the only point and click game I've ever played through. It's a Hideo Kojima game so no wonder it's amazing. The story is like Blade Runner Meets Terminator. You just point and click your way through the mystery of the Snatchers with a few shooting sequnences tossed into mix things up. You could use the Konami Justifier light gun for the shooting parts...which I think would make the last oe a hell of a lot easier as it's quite a challenge. The voice acting is AMAZING. It holds up to this day, considering it's a Sega CD game, and voice acting didn't really pick up the quality until the end of the PS1/N64/Saturn era came to an end.
There are a ton of references to the Metal Gear series. Most notably your sidekick the Metal Gear Mark II. Which looks nearly identical to the Metal Gear Mk II in MGS4. The only difference being MG MKII in this game has legs versus the sportier wheeled one in MGS4. There are plenty of other nods to the Metal Gear series in this game...so much so that I want to find a real copy of this game for my Metal Gear collection to be complete.
Donkey Kong Country - Super Nintendo
I've got a lot of nostalgia for this game. I saved for weeks to get it. Way back in the day Nintendo sent me a VHS advertising this new game starring Donkey Kong. It was a goofy video but it did it's job and sold me on it instnatly. I remember watching it a few times one day when I was sick home from school. So I made sure to get this game when it first came out. It wasn't long after it came out, I had my hands on it and played through to the end as fast as I could. This has some of the best music on the SNES. The gameplay isn't too ground breaking but the graphics and sound are about as good as it gets on the SNES.
D - Sega Saturn/3do
I just beat this game tonight for the first time. It was a unique experience. It didn't take long for me to get stuck. There's a mirror you can use to give you hints but it breaks after three uses. So I FAQ'd it up and kept on going. You have two hours to beat the game and I did not want to get deep into it and have to start over. So I used the FAQ every time I got stuck. There's one part where I don't even know how anyone could get past it without a FAQ or spending countless playthroughs trying everything possible to figure out. The game is spooky as hell and has a great atmosphere. The grapgics are great and so is the music which makes the atmosphere very dark and ominous. Definitely a great game to play in the dark or while stoned. Preferrably both for maximum effect.
Vigilante 8 - Playstation
This is my favorite car combat game. Probably the only game I like that's all driving. There's sort of a 70's vibe through the whole game with great funk and disco music on the sound track. The cast of characters are all very interesting and have their own story lines. You play through the various levels blowing the hell outta the other characters on the map. There's an arcade mode and multiplayer mode that just focuses on the action. The story mode has some great looking cutscenes and a sort of tongue in cheek humor that reminds of me old grindhouse movies. There are plenty of cheats and unlockables. The best one is the ability to unlock a flying saucer! Also you can pop this game into any CD player and listen to it's ass kicking hard rockin sound track any time you want. If you've got the sequel Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense you can use this disc to unlock the levels from the first game! Amazing! I'm going to try to track down the N64 versions and the Dreamcast version of V8:2O for some comparisons.
Alien Vs Predator - Super Nintendo
This was the first SNES game I played way back when. When I first got my SNES for Christmas the only game I had was Super Mario World so my Dad took me to Meijer to rent a game and that game was Alien Vs PRedator. I loved it! Predator 2 was one of my favourite movies so I loved being able to play as the Predator. All the sweet weapons are there and you can get power ups that make you invisible. It's pretty bad ass, there's better side scrolling brawlers on the SNES but this one was fun if you like Predators.
Three Dirty Dwarves - Sega Saturn
Recently played this game for the first time and it's earned its way to my favourite game list. Wow! First thing it did right was immediately remind me of the Lost Vikings. You controll three dwarves and can cycle between the three with the shoulder buttons just like in the Lost Vikings and each of them have special abilities and moves to get you to the end of each side scrolling beat 'em up level. If one of your guys gets hit you can run over to them and smack them with yout light attack and revive them on the spot. So as long as you can revive them you don't have to use any lives or continues. This is nice. But still expect to die in some levels! This is a pretty challenging game but the art style and gameplay is really solid and should keep you coming back for more. What really made me fall in love with the game was the unique boss fights. The third boss is a Gym. Yeah...a Gym. Macho toughs are throwin dumbbells out the window...and I think protein powder too...so you've got to rip the buidling down with your BARE HANDS! Halfway through the fight feet pop out of the foundadtion and the building starts hopping around and chasing you down. amazing! There are levels with differing styles of gameplay. One level is a baseball level where you've got to hit the baseballs at the Orcs to knock them out so you can move your guy around the bases. Each of your three characters has to make it all the way around back to the home plate. It was challenging at first but once you get the hang of it it was pretty damn fun!
The story is also priceless! Apparently four super genius children have been created by the military and they spend their time playing a table top RPG and they're characters are the Three Dirty Dwarves so somehow their genius brains make it so the dwarves role play their way to an inter-dimensional gate and summon them into the real world to rescue the children. Well as they're playing the nasty General orders his men to take the kids away tp have them use their noggins for something more productive like breeding some genetically enhanced super soldiers. As the kids are being taken away one of the kids tosses the many sided die....allowing the dwarves to come through the inter-dimensional gateway. The dwarves land in the Bronx, more specifically in a sporting goods store where they arm themselves, but not before some nasty orcs and dragons fall through the inter-dimensional gateway too! So you've got to battle Orcs and dragons and goblins and also some people from the Bronx are there too. GREAT GAME.
Wing Commander III Heart of the Tiger- 3DO/Playstation
This game is amazing! Wing Commander was a very popular Space Combat Sim on the PC. In this entry you've got AMAZING cut scenes
featuring Mark Hammil, Tim Curry, Malcolm McDowell,John Rhys-Davies, Porn star Gynger Lynn and Tom Wilson better known as Biff from Back to the Future.
Definitely an all star cast. This is the only FMV game I've ever really played and it's also among the best. This is also the game that overheated my ps1.
I had been playing for like 12 hours straight when the ps1 decided it couldn't handle that much awesome and had to take a break.
Saturn Bomberman - Sega Saturn
Where have you been all my life Bomberman? I heard about the Sega Netlink and thought it was amazing that the Saturn had online play and that it still worked today, in 2009. So after doing some research I found the Netlink worked with 5 games all of which are pretty awesome.
So after getting my Netlink I joined the forums at The Saturn League . One of the five games is Saturn Bomberman. So I bought it from someone at the Netlink League. WOW! Best $30 I'd spent in a long time. I was hooked! The single
player game is a lot of fun. Bomberman is best when multiplayer, the Saturn version supports up to 10 players if you've got enough multi taps, in Japan there's a bomberman multitap that I'd love to have, and its the only netlink game to support up to four players. You can have to players on each Saturn and play over netlink.
This is by far my favorite netlink game. I've since gone Bomberman crazy and bought a few more Bomberman games. Bomberman Quest for the Gameboy color and Bomberman on the Turbografx 16.
Splatterhouse - Turbografx 16
One of, if not the, biggest reasons for me getting my TG16. I managed to snag a complete copy of Splatterhouse on Ebay not to long ago.
Did this game live up to the hype? Hell yeah it did! This is the first game to have a parental warning on the cover of the game. You play as Rick, you wear a magic demon mask that looks suspiciously like a hockey mask and you walk to the right punching Demons.
This game is a lot of fun if you like sidescroler beat 'em ups. One of the Boss fights is a haunted room throwing chairs and lamps at you as well as knives which you also punch. Rick don't give a fuck.
