According to Erich Ratzlaff, his family, the noble family of von Schroeder, fled Hildesheim during the Napoleonic Wars. They were robbed during their flight. Wilhelm first went to Prussia, and later to Deutsch Wymyschle. He remained a Lutheran, but his wife was a member of the Deutsch Kazun Mennonite Church.
