Reason Assignment
This conversation takes place between my mom and me. It never actually happened.
Mom: How come you never want to go to Mass anymore?
Me: I just don't really believe some of the things the priests tell us.
Mom: What don't you believe?
Me: Well for one thing, I have a problem with the idea that we were created by God instead of evolution.
Mom: But God had to create us, we know that God created the universe and humans are a part of that universe. (False or vague premises)
Me: But that's stupid. We don't even know if God exists, let alone that he created the whole universe.
Mom: Well of course he exists. He created us. (Begging the question)
Me: Well that doesn't make much sense. Besides, I don't want to go to Mass because everyone there just blindly follows whatever they're told. I want to actually learn deeply about faith and religion. (Non sequitur)
Mom: How can you say that! What would make you think that you, a simple high school student, could possibly understand religion more than a priest? (Ad hominem)
Me: Well why is that so hard to believe? Remember that thing with priests and sexual abuse a while ago? (Red herring)
Mom: That has nothing to do with the fact that the priests have studied a lot more about religion than you. It isn't so bad to listen to what they have to say on the matter.
Me: Okay Mom, I'll go to Mass.
