Amorphous Metal is a special kind of magnetic material formed by rapidly cooling down molten metal. The cooling rate is so fast that there is no time crystallization. Thus, as its name implies, amorphous metal does not have a rigid crystal structure. Because of this, the material can be magnetized and demagnetized easily and hence ideal for power transformer application.

This presentation [Intro_AM.pdf] provides a quick overview about the impacts of amorphous metal to the electric industry as well as to environmental protection. Another article [Asian_Energy_2000.pdf] provides some further details about the adoption of this technology.
